Any 717 News Out There?

Tue Jun 13, 2006 1:30 pm

Are there any news about the 717 and its operating airlines out there? Olympic? About the parked Jetstar 717s? Bangkok Air?
Thanks

What do you want to know exactly?

The last one has been delivered and the line is closed, but i am sure you know that.

The JQ ones are going back to Qantaslink and NJE to replace the BAE146.

The other carrier with a small number of 717s is Aebal that flies with Spanair. Interesting enough that Spanair contracts out Fokker 100 flying to Girjet.

Turkmenistan 717s aren't going anywhere, neither are the HA, YX or FL ones.

Bangkok Air has mentioned the A320s or most likely something smaller like A319 or A318 will replace the 717s when the lease period runs out later this decade.

There's quite a few smaller fleets out there, but I personally think most if not all of them will end up wearing teal colored tails with a white "A" on them within the next 10 years or so, as the leases run out, or the smaller airlines consolidate fleet types.

It also wouldn't surprise me if when all was said and done, all the 717s left flying ended up w/ white "A"'s on the tail, too ... unless Midwest takes a few and keeps their fleet as well ...

 Smile

That plane is just such a darned good fit for FL; there's no question it saved their bacon.

To my knowledge Qantaslink is not operating all ex-Jetstar 717's, six are parked...

It's a shame that the 717 did not sell any better...i think they are a great aircraft for the shorter routes. What is the fuel consumption like compared to other aircraft in the same category?

Not true, they love them and will eventually acquire at least two of the Olympic birds.

One thing that might skew FL's thinking were the CEO's comments that block hour costs for 717 vs 73Gs were nearly identical, but there are more ASMs with a 73G. That could influence future acquistions of 717s for FL. Not to say that they won't, but if there's a good deal on a 73G out there, I'd expect them to jump that way first before taking an equally good deal on a 73G.

What I have heard is that Bangkok Air is in search for a 717 replacement from 2009 on, but is in search for an additional 717 for now. But this rumor is from 2005, so I am not sure if this is still correct.

Once there was a rumor that Aebal is taking more 717 (from OA?)...has anyone more infor on this?
Thanks.

I also would love to know the answer to this question, and even more interestingly, does anyone know of a resource out there that lists fuel consuption by a/c and engine type?

thanks!

My first 717 flight was in December 2000. Impulse Airlines from SYD to MEL. QF gobbled them up not long after that and painted them in QF paint for a while then switched them to Jetstar when that was formed.

I flew on a Bangkok Air 717 last month while flying between HKT and BKK. It is a really comfortable plane to fly on and it is really quiet in the cabin while you are in the air. I agree, it is an excellent aircraft for short one hour flights. I'll take that over a propjob any day.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

FYI on www.justplanes.com there's a listing for 5 B717s of which I believe some are Qantas machines, wonder if there will be any takers soon?

Has anyone heard much about the problems they are having with the actuators on the 717's? I know Midwest has been having alot of trouble with the ailerons and spoilers because of this. Recently they have been having a lot of mechanical delays with because of these parts.

A little bit off topic: has anyone statistics about Aebal's operations? Do they only fly for Spanair? Thanks.

I've heard this an inventory and parts agreement issue with Midwest. They maintain very lean inventories.

That is because you can't find the spoiler actuators and they fail all the time. Yes it is true that this causes many delays but this is not a new problem. We have been taking delays for these from day one. There is a redesigned actuator coming out so hopefully that will fix this problem. Now all we have to do is change all 100 of them.

After rereading my post, I was vague. It is a problem with the aircraft that is being addressed. Boeing is in no huge hurry to correct b/c IMO production has ceased. Boeing has probaly determined the cost feasibility is to pay the warrantees than correct the problem.

I've been told, Midwest takes the worst hits on this b/c of their purchasing and inventory management. Though Midwest takes an anticipated hit on this Midwest still runs lean which is not a bad thing!!

Just a small point: Jetstar IS Impluse, it was renamed when QF launched it as a major LCC. It had been lurking around flying for Qantaslink and doing other odd jobs flying stuff nobody else in QF wanted to do untill the Jetstar launch.

Another small point, the six not sub leased to NJS were not parked, they were returned to the leasor.  Smile

Yes, but they are reportedly now parked at Brisbane, awaiting a new job...
