KE Confirms Las Vegas

Wed Jun 14, 2006 1:24 am

According to a Korean news paper, KE will start ICN-LAS-ICN from Sep. 22nd. It will be thrice weekly, and LAS-ICN sector is overnight flight. KE will use 777-200 on this route.

ICN-LAS: Tue, Fri, Sun. depart 20:30 (arrive 15:00?)
LAS-ICN: Mon, Wed, Sat. depart 00:50 (arrive 06:00?)

Arrival time is not listed on the news, so those are my guess. KE hopes to overtake JAL's suspension on Asia and LAS direct service (which starts on Sep 30th.)

I wish that one would have stuck around. The times were fantastic, and customs at LAS were a breeze in comparison to LAX or SFO.

Why are all of these international airlines going for such a low-yield destination as LAS? Do different types of customers visit LAS from Asia than North America? From North America it's every Jim-Bob and Joe-Jack buying $40 roundtrips on Allegiant and eating at LAS's $1.99 buffets.

To add to HeeseokKoo's post and to post what was on the Korea Times' site:

Korean Air, the Las Vegas authority, and the Nevada commission also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly promote tourism to the leisure and convention city.

And as it states in the article, they seem to also be going for the VFR traffic too

According to data, 68,000 Koreans visited the city in 2004, but the visitors’ authority suspects the actual number is much more and will increase.

Fingers crossed for this flight!

are u kidding me? it must have been a long time since you've beento Vegas. What you are decribing is more akin to the Gulf Coast casinos...

Vegas has remade itself into an upscale adult destination, with hotels like the Bellagio, the Wynn, the Four Seaasons bosting daily rates taht start at around $300 and soar upwards...

Dining has also changed a good amount... there are a number of mobile five star winners in vegas.. there is a branch of Le Cirque, Todd English has opened a restaurant..

Sure there are bargains to be found but they are being squeezed out by the bigger (more expensive) players..

Yes, Las Vegas may be more upscale now then before. But many upscale customers don't even fly to LAS commercially, but by private jet, many provided by the casinos.

Yields are still to low to justify service. That's why VS doesn't sacrifice a LHR slot for its service to LAS.

That be said, there is still plenty of international charters to LAS.

Pretty sure that LAS is regulated to LGW due to Bermuda II. Same as if BA tried service to LAS, would have to go through LGW.

As for charters, we get MyTravel and Condor, I have not seen/heard of any other charters to LAS from over-seas.

Current Over-Seas Carriers at LAS:

JL 744 to Tokyo
BMI A330 to MAN
Condor 763 to Frankfort
MyTravel A330 to ?????
VS 744 to LGW

flights are not operated daily, although I have heard that VS is going to go daily soon enough.

The funny thing is the number of passengers WN has carried in April '06 over April '05 is more pax than Allegiant has carried total out of LAS in April of '06.

This is a bit innacurate. The majority of the attraction to LAS from Asia is usually the tourism/sightseeing of the Grand Canyon, combined with the west coast LA and SFO area, not particularly focused on major gambling in LAS. This is where JAL had a lot of problems. Not enough premium revenue, all packeged cheap-ass group tours with no one sitting up front. It would be interesting how Korean does on this route, because once they get to LAS and have seen everything, they usually move on to SFO or LAX and do some sightseeing there and prefer to just fly home from the west coast. But JAL would never spare a B777 on this low yield route, it was operated mostly with B747-300s with HNL market equipment with huge seating capacity so who knows.

Gambling is growing in Asia. Macau is growing tremendously. Casinos in Mcau are popping up like mushrooms and Singapore has legalised gambling last year. Thailand is still undecided. All this means LAS will be loosing its Asian connections.

LAS also has a large Filipino community, as well as a decent community of other Asian nationalities. I wouldn't be surprised to see KE competitively price LAS-MNL as part of their overall strategy.

There is also a reasonable Vegas-Macao traffic going on these days, and soon to be Vegas-Singapore as well.

Part of me says KE should run this as a triangle ICN-SLC-LAS to take advantage of all the DL feed in SLC which they could codeshare on.

Luckily, louder voices in my head tell me that there aren't too many people in Montana and Wyoming who would connect onto this. Even the SLC O&D I could count on one hand.  Smile

(KE's ICN-ATL flight isn't even daily, is it? Four or five weekly?)

Years ago people said the same thing about first Atlantic City, and then all the Indian casinos would hurt Las Vegas. But the opposite has happened, people who visited those places wanted to see Vegas !
The strip added over 12,000 rooms when I lived there in1993. People said " that's it, they will never build anymore big hotels". How many thousands of rooms have been added since then?
Food & shows now account for a much larger percentage of revenues than fifteen years ago,and don't forget about the convention business. The cheap buffets are going away, check out the food prices at the strip mega places.
The Asians will still come to Vegas as Macao has had gambling for many years.

KE035/036 ICN-ATL-ICN is currently operated daily with B747-400. During this past off season the flight was operating every other day with a B777-200.

When the flight went daily back in 2004 (I might have this wrong) peak season operated with a B747-400 and low season with a B777-200.

The flight runs pretty full.

The JAL traffic is primarily leisure. There may be some conference and trade show business traffic to LAS but majority is sightseeing. Many Japanese go to Las Vegas via LAX or SFO as a side trip to those two main cities. Japanese people are not big on table gambling, only Pachinko machines.

I groundhandle JL 26 from Nrt, I dont think its a suspension of service.
More then likely its termination of service. The yields wre low on this flight and fuel exorbitant. Our last flight will b2 29 Sept.
KE will use terminal 2 at McCarran. The Groundhandler will be either
Swissport or Penauille Servisair. Probably Swissport as they have been handling their charters.

Yep now NW has a A320 that runs between LAX and LAS daily strictly for those flying in from Asia on the NRT flight.

PR does MNL-YVR-LAS, so they can pick up passengers, I flew this route back in April, and it was pretty full both ways. (I flew LAS-YVR-LAS).

JAL will soon be pulling out of Las Vegas.

Quoting TokyoNarita (Reply 14):
The majority of the attraction to LAS from Asia is usually the tourism/sightseeing of the Grand Canyon, combined with the west coast LA and SFO area, not particularly focused on major gambling in LAS.

That may be true for Japan but not for mainland Asia. The Wynn, MGM Grand, Venetian, and Bellagio are raking in the dough on the Chinese, and Korean gamblers.

Quoting TokyoNarita (Reply 14):
This is where JAL had a lot of problems.

JAL, had a lot of problems, because JAL has been having financial problems for years. It is not that LAS doesnt attract feed, or demand. It is that JAL has to cut back a lot if they want to survive.

Quoting TokyoNarita (Reply 14):
Not enough premium revenue, all packeged cheap-ass group tours with no one sitting up front.

Honolulu?

Quoting Burnsie28 (Reply 43):
Yep now NW has a A320 that runs between LAX and LAS daily strictly for those flying in from Asia on the NRT flight.

The flight has been up and running for 5 years...

Ooops, sorry, I skipped over it when transcribing my notes. CO is at #6 with 168,100.

HP/US are still listed separately but I combined them. Individually it would be HP for April at about 644,935 pax and US at 119,690. Amercia West Express is also separate and is at 72,309.

I'm well aware of that, I was just pointing it out, it was switching between an A319, its a steady A320 now, and the service originally started with a DC-9

Question to all. The flights are listed on the Korean Air website, but not available for sale. What gives?
