Delta Gets Approval For Atlanta-Leon, Mexico

Wed Jun 14, 2006 9:13 pm

Delta Air Lines said it received US approval to launch Atlanta-Leon Del Bajio flights from Dec. 1 aboard Atlantic Southeast Airlines CRJ700s. Mexican approval is pending. If I'm not mistaken, this makes the third US airline at Leon- AA, CO the others.

Well, there wasn't a reason for the DOT not to award the rights to DL/ASA, other than them being slow-a$$es of course  Wink .
Now if only DL would get going on ATL-HMO.

Well, AA has 2 daily flights to Leon, one is actually an MD80, the other being an RJ. But yes, I agree, the CRJ seems to be the proper equipment for this route.

Yay, more flights added to a concourse which already has no more room. E concourse is so short on gate space with the big international expansion. All is takes is one burp with the schedule, being maintenance or just a late flight and the whole thing gets thrown out of wack. Planes get to wait out for 45+ minutes... real good customer service when they miss all of their connections.

Didn't I read somewhere that DL will be shifting some international departures to the T concourse as well?

Co is up to SIX weekday flights between BJX and IAH. One 735 and the rest ERJs.

This route has exploded over the years.

Depatures out of T- Concourse, but arrivals still need to clear in E- Concourse. AA used to fly to DFW with F-100's from Leon.

The flight can depart out of either T, A or B if E is full. And the plane arrives at 12:40pm, far outside the time frame for all the Euro flights, so it's absolutely no issue.

Speaking of Mexico and the widget, I wouldn't be surprised if DL and not B6 gets JFK-CUN given how DL's been scoring those Mexican routes as of lately.

I've heard of no international departures out of A or B except for the Canadian flights.

Good DL is looking for new markets, though, Mexicans prefer Mexican airlines.

That hurts DL's application, it doesn't help it. DOT perfers new entrant carriers, not established ones.

Just curious as to what has caused this explosion of flights at Leon to/from the US... from 0 departures to 4-5 daily? I've been there, but didn't realize there was enough business interest to warrant that much traffic... or is it predominantly leisure?

Thanks...

DL has plenty of options to squeeze more flights out of Concourse E. One might be bussing in RJ arrivals, kind of like NW used to do with the Saabs at DTW. Also, widebodies could be taken around to domestic gates for their departures. Catering and boarding a 767 or 777 for a trip to MCO or SFO or wherever it is going after its arrival from abroad takes up a gate for a while.

Well what they've been doing some when they run out of gate space is parking them on the 6 North or 6 South pad and deplaning via the people movers.

While this might sound like a good idea, Delta doesn't have enough super tugs or maintenance move teams to accomplish this. Basically, the new international concourse can't come soon enough.

I know it would take some investment (as would bussing, actually), but if international flights are really the money makers for DL, it seems like it would be worth it. After all, the crunch only really occurs in the afternoon (European arrivals), so it might only take moving something like 5 or 7 widebodies to alleviate the problems.
