Thu Jun 15, 2006 1:37 am

Just back from some time in EYW, noticed this sign showing the new terminal planned for Key West, It is scheduled to be built in the parking lot of the current facility -

Looks nice.... the current one is basically a shack.

Will appreciate the new amenities, but will miss the total "old school" terminal I remember from the past ten years of visiting. Those of you who have visited EYW can remember the outdoor waiting area under the canopy, the hole in the wall they used to pass the bags through for baggage claim (heck, they just added a 10ft long baggage carosel in the past 5 years).

In the past few years the security needs have really bunched up the departure lounge, now its just a crowded mess add in the average aircraft size has grown from 19-seat B1900 to regular visits from E170 and C705's (they had both an Republic E170 and ASA CRJ705 leaving with minutes while I was waiting from my E145 to depart).

Progress...

Will is this expansion include the runway in addition to the terminal?

It's about time. I have sat in that claustraphobic waiting area after security for too long - especially if a flight is late. You get a DL RJ an an AA ATR boarding at the same time and it's a sticky crowd in there. The kitschy restaurant by the Eagle counters is cool though.

The restaurant is known as "The Conch Flyer", They recently added a outdoor area. The outdoor area does not have ramp views.

Ah, yes. Thanks Vegas. I knew it had the word "conch" in it somewhere.  Smile

None discussed.... Really no room to expand.

FWIW, our EYW-MCO E145 used only about 3500' to depart. Flight was full.

Being old enough to remember, I kinda miss the old days with the PBA DC-3's coughing their way in and out of Key West as well as some of the other early days of Key West flying.

Anyone remember seeing the full flap extension on Eastern's 72's as they made their way in?

Guess progress is good...but Key West will never be what she once was.

Happy Flying All.

Yippie, hurry up and build it........hate waiting in that no restroom inside security area.

Is it my imagination or does that new artist rendering look quite similar to the passenger drop off point for the new terminal at RSW?

Wow, how did they deal with such a short runway getting out?

Personally, I like the shack. It has character.

Doubtful, one direction really doesn't have the room, i.e. Roosevelt Blvd is too close and you can't move it farther away as cars would be in the water. In the other direction it should be doable but the environmentalists would throw a fit if they tried to fill in the evaporating ponds. Never mind the fact that the whole end of the island the airport is on is manmade from WWII including the ponds. In reality, it's more practical to use the Navy base for larger aircraft when needed.

If I remember correctly, they positioned the plane at the very very end of the runway, did a full engine run up and then released the brakes. It was almost as if you were "sling-shotted" off the runway. Now that was flying!

I remember taking that Eastern flight several times -- both the landing and the takeoff were amazing. As StarCityFlyr stated, I too remember going to the absolute end of the runway, engines were run up and then the brakes were released -- more a launch than a take off!

What about Navy Key West(Boca Chica.) They could co-use it like they do at ABQ and I believe CHS and the like. NQX has a longer runway than EYW. Then maybe an airline might want to fly something down there even bigger than an RJ.

They have been talking about that for at least the 10 years I have been visiting. The Navy is not interested in sharing, and even with all the faults of a 4900' runway, it serves the community well.

Not much growth potential on a 2x4 mile island.

We won't even start with the NIMBYs, you thought you had in bad in your local airport...............

Now what's the reason again why a E70 can't do CLT-EYW? Is it because of the added weight of the fuel to Reach CLT? I know the runway is short, but if a E70/CR7 can make it to FLL/ATL.. it must be another reason

No one said it can't.

The CR7 is capped at about 54 going down and that is on a good day. DL operates the flight giving up 16-17 seats plus has a strict baggage limit. Despite that the flight has done well. US just must think their E70 can be better utilized than operating to EYW at no more than 70% capacity.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Ahhhhh... Ohhhhh.. okay...

I didn't know. Interesting.. Thanks for the info..

Would it be a good Q400 route then as the Prop planes need less runway? Could the Q400 fly at capacity, then?

They've done this with charters in the past, not sure if it's still going on. Passengers are bussed back and forth to the terminal at KEYW.

Are they going to name it the McCoy terminal. I thought MCO was McCoy or is that a field?

Actually comair can come in with a full boat, and can sometimes take off with all seats filled, but only in the winter.

USairways is the only jet operator that is not weight restricted out of Key West. I've personally put 72 pax and 115 bags on the aircraft....

the reason US doesn't fly EYW/CLT is that PSA operates the 70 seat operations in CLT with the CRJ 700s... CLT was never meant to see the E170s. PSA has flown CLT/EYW a few times in the CRJ 200 as extra sections, and flew a few EYW/CLT nonstops, and the restriction was only 36 pax...

You may see US mainline come to EYW with the 190's though.
