Lufthansa PTV In Eco Class

Thu Jun 15, 2006 3:25 am

Good evening.

I just came back from a 2 week job for Lufthansa, installing Business class in the 2 A300's that will be used to middle east. (quite interesting job indeed.)
I got talking to the project engineer for that project, and i asked him if he knew if/when Lufthansa was planning to finally install PTV in Economy class. He then told me that they actually just recently had decided to get PTV in all of their long haul jets. Has anyone else heard of this? Very good news indeed if correct.
He also told me that they had been waiting to put on-demand systems in their Business/first class, because they wanted to wait until there were no more "baby deceases" on the system. But it seems to be more stable now, so they are considering upgrading this also.

You mean PTVs, right? Every LH's long-haul plane has in-flight entertainment in Y  Wink

Yeah, indeed IFE is a bit general term. Let me edit my post to be more specific..

I phoned Lufthansa just three weeks ago and they told me that they consider installing PTV´s but that a final decision is yet to come.
It looks like the moment has finally arrived (hopefully) and maybe LH is becoming more enjoyable for y-class passengers on long haul flights.
I am curious about the new system, how many movie selections will there be, does it take as much time to install them as refitting their long haul planes with the new C-class (forever) or could they speed up that progress?

Why would they want to install PTV's in Y faster than a new C Class. A new C Class could bring more money but Economy Class isn't known for that.

AFAIK they are somewhat tight with longhaulers, so they can't just pick them from the sky and do the conversion. Especially with a totally new cabin that takes a bit and they probably do it during one of the mx breaks...

I am pretty sure that installing the PTV will take a while too, unless they included some prep work for that in the C conversion (wires, ...). Also, many Y cabins have the old seats which have to be remodelled or swapped, the newer planes (346, 333 I think and obviously the 380) have holes in the seatbacks, so there might be some prep done already.

The PTV rumor has been around for long but I thought it was a fact that with the EIS of the 380 at LH the PTV in cattle class would come too...

My guess is that they include some prep work like wiring and stuff in the C conversion, so they more or less add the black box and the PTV...

I'd say LH is competitive in the front of the bus, but in the back, the lack of PTVs is reason enough for those who have to languish in coach to consider flying somebody else. Those shared LCDs are never in the right place -- either too close or too far...

Its the old C-class seats, they have been taken from a A330 if i'm not mistaken.
These A300's are in surprisingly good condition i must add..

I don't think that LH's old C Class seat is competitive with other carriers especially if you compare it to Asian Carriers. But still they are not refitting their aircrafts very fast.

That might be, because Lufthansa has no reason to refit their planes fast, since their C-class is doing great, no matter if old or new seats.
If passengers would avoid LH on purpose because they do not offer the right C class product since it is outdated, I am pretty sure, LH would refit those planes a little faster.
That brings up a question in my head, are the planes refitted with new seats only during a D-check or are there other occasions were this is done? If not, it would explain why it takes so long.

I wish I had a dime for everytime a link was posted about LH installing PTV in Y class.

My moto with LH is: "I'll believe it when I am able to flip my own channels".

In the meantime, say all you want about them - they're still an incredibly well managed airline. Load factors are very high in all their classes. When all the world majors started installing their PTVs in their Y class and LH sat in the background, I was the first to think that it's suicidal. But years after BA, AF, SQ, and the likes, LH is still flying more passengers than most. I guess it's true: "If the price is right, I'll bring a good book".

Cheers!
