Pacific Coastal Saab 340

Fri Jun 16, 2006 4:52 am

I didn't know that Pacific Coastal airlines in Vancouver is operating a Saab 340 now. Any idea why they brought in a Saab 340 when the majority of their fleet is comprised of Shorts 360's? What route are they operating it on?

They are the cover of the most recent Saab Market Report, which answers most of your questions. More information here:

The Saab 340s are replacing the Shorts 360s. Some of the Shorts' have already left the fleet.

I saw one in YVR yesterday afternoon and I have to say the new Saabs do look nice in the Pasco colours.

Thanks a lot for the info. I wonder why they chose the Saab 340 over the Dash 8. You'd think it would be a natural choice for a Canadian airline not to mention older surplus Dash 8's on the market. But anyway, glad to see a newcomer to the Pacific Coast. With the increased range of the Saab 340, perhaps we will see Pacific Coastal launching some new routes or doing a bit of expanding.

Using it on their new YVR-YZZ runs, and I would assume upguaging their B1900 YVR-YXC and YVR-YWL on an as needed basis to the 340. Would assume for adhoc charter work YVR - YAZ and YVR - ZMT during fishing charter season.
You can't get there from here.

Darn! I was hoping the new Saab would pay a visit to Victoria. But I guess we'll be stuck with the "flying sheds"  Wink . Although, in the article in Saab Aircraft leasing, they did say that they were looking to phase out their Embraers and Pacific Coastal usually sends one Embraer a day to Victoria so could that mean the possibility of a Saab. Or since that the Saab is replacing the Shorts 360 on a lot of routes, I guess this frees up some 360's for the YVR-YYJ service.

Pasco is also getting rid of the Bandits, I think they're just standardizing the fleet right now. As for the Shorts, I know a few are going to a new (cargo?) startup in Vermont called Air Now and a few are going to Aruba, also to a startup.

The fleet is pretty much down to the Saab 340s and the beech 1900s now. DForce, I'm not sure why they chose the Saabs over the Dash-8, I'm assuming the got a pretty good deal on them? They were formally with Chatauqua and stored in Bangor, Maine for quite a while.

Well the article in Saab Magazine said that they chose them because of their low operating costs. But can we verify if the operating costs of a Saab 340 is less than a Dash 8? Does anyone know?

Let's take a route like Vancouver to Port Hardy or Vancouver to Victoria.
