On Tour With The 787: Dreamliner Is On Schedule

Fri Jun 16, 2006 9:59 pm

From ATW Online:

A couple of things to note:
1) 2nd production line decision still expected at the end of this month
2) Emrates expected to launch 787-10 next month at Farnbourgh.

This is relatively big news if true. Too bad its overshadowed by scandal.

If they do decide on a 2nd production line, when will it open? And this will essentially allow them to double the amount of orders they have already gotten for the first three years of slots, correct?

It's not expected to open until 2010, so it would not allow for a doubling of slots over the first three years.

The first item there was pretty much expected.

The business about the B787-10 is a bit of news though. The previous Boeing statements on B787-10 were vague with folks saying "... not a matter of if, but when" and "... sometime later in the year...". If Boeing pulls the trigger at Farnbourgh, we are likely to see a whole bunch of additional orders for the B787 in 2006.

So, I gather that Emirates is to launch the 777-10! Woohoo! This is good news, I think.

What scandal? ITA coach and goalie being investigated for match fixing?

Whether EK will launch 787-10 still remains to be seen. They still could go for A350 (A370????). Singapore was one of prime candidates for -10 and somehow they went for -9... They could always pull Air New Zealand and change it later though.
Emirates have done stranger things in the past, though... like ordering 45 A380s for example....

The only reason that they didn't buy the -10 is because it is not officially being offered for sale. 20 aircraft is probably not enough to launch the aircraft. However they still have 20 options which they could convert to the -10.

I apologize -- I meant to type "787-10"! Perhaps it was a Freudian mistake, though, on my part.

I like the 777 a lot and hate to see it out-competed even by another Boeing product.

It doesn't seem to me that the article said that exactly. The quote from the article is the following:

Citing continued strong interest in the aircraft, he said a decision on an increase in the production rate will be made later this month.

Would it be possible for Boeing to increase production on the one line without opening an all-new line? Or is the original line basically "at capacity"?

I believe Boeing said that the only way to increase production is to open a 2nd production line.

Original production was supposed to be 90 frames per year I believe. That since has increased to 148 at the moment as far as I know. I don't know anything about production lines, but there has been demand for the planes.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Holy cow, 148 frames a year! That's 12 and 1/3 frames a month, up from 7.5 frames a month! To me that seems quite an incredible leap. This has to be considered another groundbreaking aspect of the 787, or is it not?

I happened to be passing Boeing today and saw this near a hangar. It looks like it is coming along. Sorry if it has been shown on here before, but hey now!!!

Thanks, F9animal. I haven't seen those yet.
We've yet to see any pics of wing components. Anyone have an idea on when we may?

These are not actual sections, who in a sound mind would store them outside in Seattle's climate?

Those are general mock-ups for painting, posted often before...

@ Nudelhirsch

I remember Boeing built some B757s on the apron instead in the completion hangar due to a lack of capacity. It was a funny picture to see two fuselage section been assembled by two cranes - OUTSIDE...

 Smile

But these B787-segments are test-frames and nothing more.

Thanks for the pics F9Animal. Although I realize these are proto pics, they're the best close-ups I've seen so far. Interesting to see to section join detail around one of the windows. The next 12 months (manufacturing and first flight) are going to be VERY interesting.

SQs order was 20/20 and to me that always sounded like 20 789 + 20 787-10 when launched.

Quoting Zvezda (Reply 4):
It's not expected to open until 2010, so it would not allow for a doubling of slots over the first three years.

I believe the line would open specifically for the 787-9 and 787-10, so it would come on line when the 787-9 is testing and delivery frames are being built.

Thanks guys!
I think I just got lucky yesterday. I just happened to be driving by going to get a good look at Airforce 1, and I saw this. I almost flipped the car, as I got more excited to see that then Airforce 1! I will keep an eye out and see if I can get any views of the wing section. I also have a friend who is working on the 787 project. The hangar door was open, and I can say that there appears to be more parts to this plane already. I just could not get a good vantage point over that fence.

Not sure on this, but I have never seen them outside before. It could have been that they put it outside for some summer cleaning in the hangar. It was not raining at the time, and when I drove back, I did not see it out there again.

Imagine my excitement when I saw it! LOL! I am sure I almost caused an accident, as I was all over the road. Just cool to see it, I guess. I have another picture I will try to upload. I think the third pic is even closer and better.
