DTW Announcements And Pics

Hey all, I was just checking up on the site of my favorite airport, and just recently updated were some construction photos/demolition photos of what's going on with the Davey Terminal, and there is also some renderings of the new terminal added, plus a new building schedule.

Check out the site... I'm very excited. Just wish it would open sooner. By 4th Q 2008, DTW will be the best airport in North America, and possibly the world. Hopefully NW will emerge from BK by then.

NW will be liquidated by then, or they will be part of the DL family by then. DTW regardless is going to be a toilet.

Unlike Sean, I think DTW will look much nicer. I don't mind flying through the Smith terminal, but the North Terminal will be a nice improvement. However, I wish our parking situation would be better.

DTW is a good airport in that I like the ticketing gates. Thats about it. Oh and the old Indy boarding area  Sad

But you are right Neilalp. The parking area needs to be improved. One of the worst.

The runways at DTW also are not my favorite I always feel like im driving out on a country road with so many bumps!

The runways and taxiways are just and extension of our quality roads!  Wink You would think the runways and taxiways would be better since they don't receive salt treatment like the roads, but they still feel like they do.

I enjoy being able to taxi on the bumpy taxiways. Better than being parked on one waiting and waiting to takeoff. I hardly if ever have to wait to takeoff at DTW.

Is this in reference to our gate when I was at DH in DTW? HAHAHA while I cherish a lot of great memories from B6.

I know that this may sound bad, but I am glad to see the Davey terminal go. I have way too many unpleasant memories in that place with its crowded concourses, summertime weather delays, NW worker slowdowns (in the late 1990s), etc. The new terminal at DTW is really a first rate facility and I hope that by the time the new terminal is finished, the Michigan economy will begin to turn around.

I would agree, the NW World Gateway is an excellent facility, flew thru there for the first time last week from AMS on my way to STL. Excellent Customs and Immigration facilities, fast baggage delivery, just an outstanding experience. I had not been thru DTW since right after the NW MD-80 crash in 1987...  Sad

Apparently Sean here isn't a big fan of DTW. Unfortunate. It will be nice to finally have two great facilities at DTW. I am at DTW every so often, and the WorldGateway is a nice place. The new North Terminal will probably be just as nice. It won't be as good as the WG if there isn't a National Coney Island though.

1. Don't know why you think that, DL has a higher chance of that happening.

2. Or DL will be a part of the NW family

3. DTW is a nice airport (NW worldgateway for now) so I don't know what your talking about. Sounds like either do you.

DTW has became my favorite airport after connecting through the Northwest World Gateway a couple weeks ago. I also have a new found respect for Northwest and hope they survive. When I stepped off my Northwest Airlines Boeing 757-300 into the terminal, It made the hair on my neck stand up. I have never seen such an amazing airport. Here are a few pics I snapped at DTW:

Haha I miss Indy so much. They livend up that gate. I flew the 2nd to last week that Indy was up to IAD from DTW. Was one amazing flight. I would have paid $200 just for that flight. Instead I paid only $49  Smile

Oh I know! It seems like there is always construction on the same exact spots on I-94. I swear it never gets done. I was going to college their and the summer after I graduated high school to go check out the college my parents were annoyed by all the high way work and then when they came to visit me right before the end of my soph year they said the same exact thing! Never the less I had to buy a new Jeep sense the salt got to my other Jeep. What can I say? I am a California Surfer

If by some odd chance DL winds up in better shape than NW, both are going down the tubes... and DL were to take over NW, I am sure DL will make great use of the Midfield Terminal after they move their hub operations from CVG to DTW.

No offense, but I highly doubt that. I have a feeling, just that, a feeling; the government would try to do something to save a legacy carrier, no matter how much people don't like it. Just my 2 cents

Yeah, just like the did with Pan Am and Eastern. I am afraid, that unlike the Chrysler bailout, the airlines in their current situation are not vital to national defense, and hence not worth a bailout.

I think that comment was extremely uncalled for and unecessary. The topic is about DTW and the first comment has to be bashing NWA??

Once the UA terminal, which in my opinion is a dump is cleaned up and the runways/taxi ways with all the holes are fixed, parking problems are sorted etc, then DTW might have a chance.

Talk about bumpy and noisy. The country roads and parts of the freeway and M roads around Onsted remind me of the worst roads in AKL

Hehe

The new area does look nice thou, so that is an advantage for the airlines flying to that terminal.

DTW happens to be a fantastic airport. I live in DTW and fly out of it at least twice a month. I never once had any sort of departure delays due to traffic volumes. The NW World Gateway is one of the best airports I have ever seen. And believe me, I have seen quite a few of them around the world.

Just for your FYI...The whole design team for the airport is actually in my company. The whole design team is working together out one of our floors. Its fun to walk through the floor, and see all those concept images on the wall, and the entire airport layout!!

I found the taxi time way better then ORD and LAX and no problems with waiting for luggage.

Went by DTW today and all there is standing of the Marriott hotel is one Wall. My question is why are they only doing a new terminal with 28 gates. With UA,US,/HP,AA,WN,NK and they are moving BA, AF, Royal Jordainan back to this termainal. You would think they would add at least 4 more gates on for future expansion....

We went through this in another thread, and there will be adequete space at the North Termninal.

AF will of course remain in the Nortwest Worldgateway.

LH, BA, and RJ will move to the north terminal

Just wondering, there is one gate on the A concourse, (I think its like 47 or something like that) where they have stairs hooked up to the end of the jetway. Its one of the widebody gates I know that. But you see a couple of Mesaba planes parked there every now and then even though they have a huge concourse for airlink where most planes get their own jetways. My thought on this is that flights from canadian cities on mesaba that don't preclear are parked here so that passengers can clear customs in DTW. Can someone confirm this for me?

Apodino,

The reason they are still using A46 for Airlink flights is primarily due to the rebuilding of concourse C. When they began to rebuild Concourse C and they closed half the gates, A46 & A50 were given to Airlink and they were able to make each gate into 3 stands for Saabs & CRJ's. They gave A50 back to NW when the gates on the west side of C opened, and the gates on the east side are set to open very soon as they are almost complete with rebuilding the ramp and installing new jet bridges. As an added benefit, they have attempted to schedule inbound aircraft from Canadian cities without pre-clearance into A46 so they can go into the INS facility.

The plan for the future is to bus passengers over from arriving on B/C to the INS facility, like the used to do with the hardstands back before they began to rebuild the regional concourse

Good riddance Davey (and soon LC Smith)! This is long overdue. But I'll always remember clearly what it was all like - back in '82-'84 when I was a kid I filmed about seven three minute long 8mm silent home movies from the observation deck on top concourse C and the old parking decks. DL, UA and AC DC8s, smokey DL L10 start ups, EA A300s, New York Air D9S, the original Midway DC9... and of course the beginning of the RC hub with DC9s galore. And one very early Saturday morning I made my mother drive me out to Metro so I could film the brand new, super efficient plane of the future: DL 762 service had just begun.  biggrin

Well actually there are more than 1 phase for the airport project. The first phase is what the designs are shown for. The other phase is to tear down the other terminal and then add on and build more gates out. The entire terminal design is built for the purpose of easily expanding out with more gates.

You are correct that all International (NON NWA Affiliated) flights are moving to the new terminal (personally I think its a bad idea).

If I am not mistaken, part of the 28 gate limitation is due to the fact that Northwest provided a good bit of the financing for the WorldGateway terminal and, as such, entered into an agreement with Wayne County to limit the number of gates available in the other terminals. I am not aware if this limitation still exists but it did when the design phase for the new termial project was underway.
