Nema Identified As Possible A380 Destination

Sat Jun 17, 2006 6:38 am

I just found the pdf in the link below which is a CAA document entitled "COMPASS - keeping you in touch with people and plans at international services"

http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/28/Issue%2015%20A4%20screen%20version.pdf

In an article in this publication (dated February 2006) it states the following:

Quote:
5 UK airports are currently identified as a potential A380 destination - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Nottingham East Midlands (NEM).

Are they thinking along the lines of a suitable diversion airport, or are any carriers talking about using the airport on a regular basis? One can presume we must be talking a freight operator here due to the lack of air bridges etc.

I sincerely apologise if this has been raised previously, but it has been a long day!!!

Kindest regards,

A380Heavy

Based on the usage of the word "destination" it is leading me to presume that it would be for scheduled service...let's just see if can get their act together with the A380 program first though.

I think I read that NEMA handles the largest volume of airfreight in the whole country, so it doesn't surprise me that it would see the A380.

I believe you are right but up to now we don't get their 747's in, we regularly get the 763's, the odd 752, and used to get the 727's, MD11's and DC8's.

It does look, at the airport, as though UPS are having some new buildings constructed - maybe they are planning further expansion and this may include the introduction of the A380?

They also have regular An124 and 747 (Kallita) flights in and recently had the An225 in too (I remember seeing the ramp with 2 x An124 + the An225 at the same time - what a sight!), so handling the A380 wouldn't represent a problem.
