AA Resumes MIA-LAX 777 Service

Sun Jun 18, 2006 6:21 am

American Airlines will once again offer 777 service on their Miami-Los Angeles trans-con service, upgrading a flight currently operated with a 737-800. The flight will also be only the third domestic American Airlines route to offer three classes of service (MIA-DFW and DFW-ORD 777 flights offer only two classes). Flight begins 6 September 2006:

AA 283 MIA 0825-1100 LAX 777 Daily
AA 1520 LAX 1205-1935 MIA 777 Daily

The flight is timed to connect with Latin American flights. American Airlines offers six daily flights year-round between Miami and Los Angeles, in addition to two daily year-round flights between Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles.

This is the Hollywood special, and they need true F on this route for wealthy Latin stars who want to go to Miami or on to South America.

They've had this 777 service before on this route. The flight number was a continuation onto an S.Am. country. I was on the flight once. My first 777 flight, IIRC. Though it might have been CO LAX-IAH, which was 777 one flight a day before the Iraq war.

Have they done this for repositioning or to cater to the F market? Or perhaps both?

My first ever 777 flight was LAX-MIA on AA back on 1/1/2003. Glad to see an AA 777 doing an transcon again.

The flights is there because of repositioning (or, in better words, to use a 777 that would otherwise sit on the ground between flights to South America). However, the flights is being sold in F-C-Y because of good demand for F on the route and strong connecting F demand to/from EZE and GRU.

WOW it's being sold as three class. I was going to say if if this route was huge in F class money they might sell both First and Buss as regular buss class and just coach as coach.

I love the fact that AA doesn't have different aircraft for domestic flights and people can enjoy Buss seats for a two hour flight between DFW and MIA and stil pay coach

I wish there were more wide bodies on domestic routes but times change and so must Airlines to do whats best.

I so want to get on a T7!!! Everyday on my lunch I sit at gate L8 in front of AA's beautiful T7 doing flight 86 to LHR! I want to get on a T7 and go to London as I have never flown International or that long or on a wide body! At the same time I'm such a nervous flyer lol!

Good luck on the MIA/LAX route!

Interestingly, Sabre's Fare Quote for the flights starting in September shows F, J and Y/etc, but availability is still only 2-class. Even AA.com shows only F/Y...? Guess it's just too early to get it all loaded...

In my opinion, its a good idea (although sometimes frustrating) that they leave these seats for AAdvantage premium passengers to book first. Its a nice added perk. Unfortunately, I haven't flown a domestic flight on a 777 with my dad (who's Aadvantage Platinum) to reap those benefits, but I'm still hoping that on July 16th my AA67 flight will have 2 open business class seats day of departure that I can nab.

My opinion I'll take CO for AA anytime. Thier new business product sucks on the 767. I like the 777, but CO has that niche in the Customer Service. If AA redesigns their seats, cool beans. Till then Sky Team or Star Alliance for me.

I'm envious you've had the chance to try it already. I won't have a chance until they start the rest of the fleet and some of the European or LatAm flights are outfitted. Seems I'm always one of the last to experience anything new!

Congrats on being one of the first, but sorry you didn't like it.

They aren't the greatest looking thing in the world, I'll grant you, but you don't have to look at it while your sitting on it. If your so concerned with what it looks like, be an interior designer. Its the comfort that counts, and I wouldn't doubt for a second that its more comfortable than what they have now. If I were you, I'd reserve your judgement on it until you've flown on it.

I haven't flown on it. I can tell it doesn't look comfortable. I rarely fly on AA. My ad who just did says thier coach producton the 757 is comfy. I dont think so. He might have flown an ex TW757's, but hell see on AA 757 they arent. If someone whos flown on AA new business class can tell me, please do. I'll sample it, but I'm not optimistic about it. It looks SUPER cramped.

Unless you're talking about the cramped conditions, I don't think its fair to judge the seat until you've parked yourself in it.

Quoting MCOflyer (Reply 11):

It does look cramped, but you also have to keep in mind, in making a lie flat seat, AA found a way not to take any seats out of the cabin. This new product is a vast improvement on the old one, and doesn't take away any opportunity for profitability. Not to mention, the 767-300 is not a huge airplane, so unless they did something along the lines of a 1-2-1 configuration (the same as the Flagship Suites on the AA 777), anything is going to be cramped.

Good job by AA as far as I'm concerned.

Are any of those flights a continuation of a South American trip?

If not, any reason as to why AA has no continuation of lets say AA 900 from EZE or any other city??

Take this for what it's worth, but the pitch for the new AA business class on the 767 is 59" (according to sources on other boards). It used to be 60". Most of the other airlines with lie-flat products (JL, for example), are in the same ballpark.

I agree the seat looks cramped (from the one photo I think is widely available). Maybe it's just an awful angle as the numbers seem to indicate that AA is comparable to the competition. Or maybe the seat has less of an angle at the cost of tighter foot space.

Who knows...

Now back to the topic... I just checked AA.com and there is no Business Class available. Having status with AA, slecting coach I also can't select a seat in the Business Class cabin. So what's up with that? Are they flying the Business Class cabin empty?

And now for the bad news... No more MIA-DFW and DFW-MIA twice daily! So all the people with status with AA won't be able to benefit from the free Business Class seats that were available with these flights.

Lucky for you folks in America, you get 744/767/777's on domestic services (although I know North America is a huge place), back here in the U.K, we get nothing more than a 757 on schedule domestic services (if we are lucky), the quickest 777 route from LHR is LHR-Cairo, not exactly domestic !

Well you can't compare UK domestic to US domestic - that like saying there is no 777 on flights internally in California or Texas...

There are plenty of short widebody flights from LHR - I've flown on many BA 767's from LHR to Nice (1 hour), Prague (1.5 hours) and Athens (4 hours - shorter than US transcon) and I even recall flying on a 767 from EDI to LHR a couple of years ago - please correct be if I am wrong!

Not much, but sometimes in the winter there's an LAX-IAH 767 once a day.

Used to be that the winter would see multiple domestic 767s at LAX (and that one 777) but since CO has expanded their international routes to Europe, Asia and South America, the joy of seasonal domestic widebody flights is now rare.

United still runs a fair number of T7's on their ORD-SFO and ORD-LAX morning runs. Also, they currently do a ORD-SEA T7 flight. I've been on 2 in the past few months to SFO. Not all of the T7's are configured for 3 classes. The latest flight last month(only 2 classes) didn't have individual seat-back video selections along with the US map of your route, miles traveled, current airspeed, outside airtemp,etc... There were video monitors that dropped down every few rows. I asked the flight attendent why no individual video on the seatback in front of each seat(this is economy,of course)and she gave me a puzzled look and said she didn't know what I was talking about. She must have been new. Every seat was taken on both flights to SFO. Tim

United has 3 configurations of 777's, 2 for International use and one for domestic use (including Hawaii), the 2 international configurations have 3 classes of service with individual PTV's in Y and Y+ while the 2 class 777's used on domestic segments are F and Y and don't have PTV's at all, only monitors throughout the cabin.

I'm flying UA #3 next year ORD-OGG and KOA-ORD and am stoked to get to fly UA 777 again.

Great flight! very comfortable..just over 2:30min.
