I guess working at an airport and seeing go arounds sometimes weekly I don't get the excitment. In fact I don't even take the time to look anymore......

Great vid...however ATC were pretty keen to find out the reason for the go around...Would this type of questioning by ATC be normal or were they perhaps a bit peeved about the go around messing up their presumably busy patterns??? grumpy  It did seem a bit late to be calling a go around due to a gear warning...???

Looks to me like he had plenty of runway. He did land a bit long, but after a gear warning he probably wanted to set her down as gently as possible - which he did.

Very good landing, and it sounds like the crew did a good job handling the situation.

Watch closely you'll see the nose gear door open at the last minute.

Why rain on this parade?

Last I checked, this is a site for enthusiasts that are passionate about aviation. This is a great post of a relatively high quality and lengthy video. It nicely documents the approach and the communications regarding this relatively uncommon situation. I certainly find it interesting, as do 1662 other readers (at the time of this posting)

Thanks, Fiaz, for the enjoyable post.

It's not that they are peeved, it's just that they like to know what the cause is in case it is something that will affect following aircraft, ie windshear, strong gusts etc. A few years back on a blustery day i watched from my apartment window as a BA319 came in to land. About 3 miles from touchdown the aircraft performed a go round with the male voice saying 'shuttle XXX going around'. ATC asked for the reason over the various frequencies with the NF pilot saying 'we'll tell you later'. Back on approach 10 mins later it was a female voice handling the communications.....all she said was 'we were a bit out of shape on approach'. Probably just a rookie pilot that got caught out by the gusty winds that day, so the more experienced captain took over. But to ATC it might have been something more serious that could affect following flights.

Cheers

Uh, am I the only one who doesn't get it? It's a go-around, if you don't see one every day you'll see one every other day.

Sometimes rookie or very experienced pilots are complete out of the shape on approach and they report ATC many other reasons to go around. Just to not be with a impression of a bad pilot before their colleagues. It's weird but it happens a lot.

In this nice video the NF reported "problems with the landing gear lights". Isn't a little weird to check and see this at the final approach just seconds before touch down ?

Renato

Take a look at this video and check it out the difference between the two landings:

http://www.flightlevel350.com/Aircra...y_Pacific_Aviation_Video-6421.html

The PIA was long and smooth and this Cathay seems to be a very short landing with a nice crosswind to help.

I believe that was the start of gear retraction due to the go-around.

I think that sometimes "Go Arounds" can scare the ATC aswell, but i dunno why,,because from the sounds of this video...it seemed like the ATC were questioning that whole situation ....

By the way,,,as anyone (pilot) seen a very scaring scenario go around happen- like another aircraft on the runway...etc??

Thanks Renato!!!

for that video

i see what ur saying, but when u look closely to the PIA video...i just question why he would plant the plane down so late....see if ur having landing gear troubles....woulnt u want to plant it down so it gives u significant amounts of spaces to stop or recover.......and plus he could of brought it down smoothly a few hundreds of metres back aswell

well..im sure u guys have better judgment....what do u guys thinks??

Based on the runway markings I can see in the video, he touched down within the touchdown zone (first ~3,000 feet), albeit toward the end of the zone. Should be a perfectly safe landing.

If I were to execute a going around, and the ATC asked. I was hot and high, but too embarrased to reveal the actual reason, could I just say like what the pilot said landing gear light? Are they gonna check it?

Cheers,

This was discussed in a previous thread: RE: Cool Video Of A 747 On A Go-around -ATC Included (by Positiverate Jun 12 2006 in Civil Aviation)#ID2821338

Like I said then, very professional on both ATC and the PIA crew's end. This is what the general public and media never understands. He saw he had an unsafe light, climbed out, calmly informed ATC of the problem and that they were going to work it out, figured out all was ok, resequenced, and shot an approach for an uneventful landing. Just because a light comes on doesn't always constitute a harrowing emergency. Well done.

Very good quality video, great camera work and also nice with the ATC feed dubbed in too.

Actually, rechecking that the landing gears are green, indicating down and locked is part of the final landing items checklist.

Well, if there's windshear or a microburst about, ATC wants to know about it ASAP so that they can issue advisories to other aircraft.

There's about a million reasons why ATC would want to know why an airplane went around, ranging from the one mentioend above to FOD or an obstruction on the runway, etc....

PK716 is JFK-MAN

Now they use 747 for MAN-IAH-MAN, PK719/720. Seems to have changed over from 772 on 9th June. AP-BAT has done the last 2 flights.
