VS: Why No Alliance?

why hasn't Virgin Atlantic joined any alliance? Of course I'd want to see them in oneworld, but I know that's completely uneconomical. I think Star Or Sky would be a good choice for them. They have codeshares with JM, BD, CO, and HP, so it's a tough call. What do you think?

IIRC, it's not in their business plan. Although you get a lot of connections through an alliance, you also have to have airlines codeshare and all that stuff. Also VS is, in theory, an all international carrier and would be an awful fit for any alliance.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Yeah I supose you're right, but they might be something TUI would go after? I just thought with them mostly being owned by SQ, it would make sense that they followed in with star, or with their connections sky.

I would think they would be very attractive to Star or Skyteam due to their location. Longhaul flights out of LHR - hello!?! What alliance (aside from oneworld) wouldn't love that? With that said, I agree that due to their connections with SQ, Star would be the most likely.

Due to the fact that VS is only long-haul, I would think they would want to join an alliance for the connections within Europe, the US, and all the other places they fly...

Yeah they would be a good fit into Star Alliance. SQ owns 49% of VS so they shouldn't have a problem with them joining (although aparently they are cold on the idea for some reason?). It is however LH which is anti VS joining Star...
NZ would support VS joining I'm sure...they have a good relationship with each other.

Probably because they don't need to belong to an alliance. They do fine with the few code-share and other alliances they have.

I'm surprised, however, that being part owned by Singapore hasn't pulled the into Star.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

Very hard for VS to join oneworld. Branson never likes the idea on BA/AA joint venture over the Atlantic flights.
Moreover, 49% SQ controls is a big resistor to oneworld.

I think theres more chance of LH, joining Oneworld than VS.........its never going to happen unless of course they were bought by another Oneworld Carrier. It seems that VS is happy to go it alone and create Virgin Brands all over the world........hats off to them if you ask me.

What I find even more surprising is that their Kangaroo route goes via HKG and not SIN. I know LHR-HKG-SYD is slightly shorter than LHR-SIN-SYD, but if they have those code share agreements with SQ, wouldn't it be more logical to have a mini-hub in SIN?

VS and DJ codeshare/will codeshare on flights. VS will put their code on DJ services from SYD, and DJ will put their code on SYD-HKG-LHR flights. I remember reading a VS press release which said they had asked Navitaire to make VS and DJ reservation systems compatible to allow through ticketing and check-in.
