Pilots, Happy Or Sad To See Kai-tak Close?

Tue Jun 20, 2006 1:38 am

I just drove by what used to be Kai Tak and was wondering if pilots were happy or sad to see it close. I can see many being happy as it was a difficult approach and I'm sure that some may prefer the more routing ones into Chep lok kok. However, im sure there are others who enjoyed the tough landings and the frequent missed approaches. Pilots (and other a.nutters) what do you think?

I understand that there are issues with the new airport, (windshear?).

My recollection is that this had a bearing on the MD11 lost there a few years ago.

I suspect that most pilots would prefer to have their thrills in a Pitts rather that a B747.

After speaking to some CX flight crew at VHHH, it would appear that windshear is something to keep your eye out for. Not surprising really considering the topography of the area.
