Not really surprised about Atlanta being on that list. There is a large Ethiopian community in the Atlanta area, and Eritrean community as well.

With Atlanta, a codeshare with Delta would enable a whole host of connecting oppurtunities to be opened up

I guess any New York flights would be to EWR, as they were until a copuple of years ago

New York probably makes the most sense, if for only economic and sheer traffic volume reasons, and because it offers huge connection options to back up huge O&D. Toronto and Atlanta also probably have lots of VFR O&D I'm guessing. However, what of the rumor a few weeks (months?) back that Ethiopian was close to joining oneworld? If true, I'd say that probably tips the scales in favor of JFK, which would be able to offer the most onward connections by a prospective oneworld carrier, obviously AA.

Adding new destinations in North America is a smart move by Ethiopian. There are large Ethiopian communities in major American and Canadian cities, and North America is still a minor part of ET's expanding global route network. Do you know when ET plans to start flights to YYZ, EWR/JFK, and ATL? I wonder if ET is waiting for delivery of the new 787s it ordered before it starts flying to more cities in North America. I also wonder where these flights will stop on their way from ADD to the United States and Canada. Too bad ET does not yet have fifth freedom rights between IAD and FCO, because no other airline serves that route.

I remember on the news during an Ethiopian festival they said there was 40,000 Ethiopians in the Los Angeles region. Maybe LAX when 787's come online?  wink

They should upgrade IAD to daily service and join an alliance before adding another sporadic North American city.

Didn't ET drop EWR recently? I would assume, any return to NYC would put them in JFK this time.

Does anyone know how these ET will route these flights. Will it go through FCO? I know there is still that lingering possibility of going through ACC as well. Any thoughts?

It looks like the wheel is in motion for ET to amend its application for initial foreign air carrier permit, as it wishes to be authorized to operate within the Open Skies guidelines as signed between the governments of US and Ethiopia.

As for New York, Atlanta, Toronto, these are all stations that have always been talked about even before ET first opened routes to North America begining with IAD. While New York and Toronto may make sense in terms of available traffic and the cities being financial captitals of their respective countries, any other big city will qualify as a candidate for the "there are many expat Ethiopians" argument. Ethiopians are all over the US, with Seattle, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Minneapolis and many others having such concentration. At any rate, we shall see how this turns out and what steps the airline takes as it goes forward.
