NZ To Bring Back Domestic "Frills"

Tue Jun 20, 2006 5:47 pm

Hi everyone. I'm just new on A.Net but have been reading it for ages so thought I would share some news which will be announced next week.

NZ is going to be introducing Alcoholic Beverages, soft drink and juices again on Domestic Flights. These will be in conjunction with "snack" items like chips, pretzlels etc. These will be offered at a cost.

These will only be on B737 and A320 operated domestic services between the main centres - I don't think any of the regional destinations will be getting the new food and drink services but I'm not 100 % sure.

I can't understand why NZ hasn't done this sooner, DJ, FJ and JQ make a killing on selling these across the Tasman and I don't see why domestically it can't be just as profitable NZ already has a LCC theme to it with Express Class so why not charge for what is simply novelty on such short trips? (The longest domestic flight in NZ is only about 2 hours AKL - ZQN ZQN - AKL)

I realise these used to be free on NZ but thats the modern age of flying I guess??!

Cheers.

Des

FJ doesn't fly across the tasman. They fly to Fiji and they are a full service airline.

I think that it is great that Air New Zealand are finally doing this. Good on them. Any talk of bringing back Audio/Video like you can get on Qantas? What will be the prices for the new food?

Oh and what will be the case on the 777 and 767 flights that fly Japan-CHC-AKL? Will all people have to pay for food on this flight if they want it? I know this flight is open to local traffic but people coming from Japan will not appreciate having to pay extra if they want to fly to AKL, when they are paying for a full service, long-haul airline.

Welcome to a.net Des.

Nice of you to "spill" the beans. Sometimes it is prudent to wait for an official announcement before telling all. NZ management DO monitor this forum, and I know for a fact, they have tried to trace various people for posting information ahead of time. I have been one of them myself, though have not yet been "found". I have tended to be very careful with just exactly what I let "slip".

Good to have another kiwi on board.

My bad, I meant Freedom Air. FJ is the right code? I think it's great to, not just from a novelty idea but to squeeze a bit of extra revenue from the domestic operations which is NZ's bread and butter - it basically keeps the whole company afloat!

I'm not sure exactly on the details yet but when I know which should be early next week I will post on here. I would expect to pay top dollar though - probably prices similar to what you would pay on a train / ship where you only have the one option = expensive!

Audio / Video I do not think is coming back at all. It really is too expensive for such short flights and is not excludable. They cant charge people to watch it so I dont see it happening.

Another piece of good news for NZ is that the new CHC International Lounge (Business Class Lounge / International Koru Club what ever you want to call it) is nearing completion and is on track to be operational by September this year fingers crossed. This is a major upgrade which will come just in time for the resuming of CHC LAX , the old lounge has a capacity of about 50 so you can imagine what it was like with a 744 with a full Business Class !! In the mean time the old lounge in the old terminal is still operating - the new lounge is based near to the Qantas one in the new part of the international terminal.

No they won't have to, as it is part of an international flight.

So if I wanted free service and I was travelling CHC-AKL I should just book NZ98? They won' check my boarding pass or anything to see if I am a local customer?

Also will the prices for the new food and beverages be printed in the in-flight magazine? When can we expect to be able to buy on board?

Well for starters you could look at this month's edition and find that there are Freedom Air snack prices etc in there.. I see no reason why they would change those prices and just rename that page (btw it's just in front of the entertainment, fleet etc details).

Yes I know. There has already been a thread on that in here earlier in the month. I think it would be a good idea if NZ and SJ merge the food costing strategy just so long as NZ doesn't intorduce the policy on trans tasman routes like AKL-SYD!

Yes you could book NZ98 and get food/beverage service, though from memory I don't think you get much on that flight anyway, its only an 1hr 20 mins.

I don't think NZ would start to charge for food across the Tasman - it would be suicide if they did, what is the major difference between NZ and LCC ? The food! Even Business Class is on SJ now with the "Suite Seats" and you can rent DigiPlayer for AVOD... it would effectively turn NZ into completely Low Cost across the ditch.

I believe that the food and beverage's domestically will be contracted out and run through the Koru Club's so it may be slightly different to what is offered on SJ .

As NZ1 said, be careful with what you let loose... 'loose lips sink ships'. Thats not to say rumours and info aren't appreciated, I think its good to have NZ supporters out there having something to be excited about! Same goes for other airlines also!...I've been following some of the chatter regarding frills on domestic services on Knet...seems someone up there is listening...
I think the main issue they had was that for AKL-WLG for example there isn't a hell of a lot of time to be serving much...
AKL-CHC, AKL-ZQN, AKL-DUD definantly could however... Just when I was getting used to those kiwifruit cookies

can't understand why NZ hasn't done this sooner

The main reason is on the AKL WLG, WLG DUD & VV flights they only get a very very small window where they can sell goods, a little bigger on the AKL CHC/DUD/ZQN and ROT CHC flights. It's been in the pipline for a long long time, will be good to see.

You don't get much at all, for the one hour check in and the arrival mid morning at AKL international i'm not sure how worth while it is.

Thanks, will look forward to it. Got very bored recently on an ATR-72 flight from ZQN to CHC; could have done with a beer, some pretzels and even a cheeky chardonnay. The coffee, macadamia cookie and water just didn't quite cut it.

Great news for NZ, pity I won't be using the frills too much as I am usually on the ATRs.

On the NPL-AKL service, as there is now 1 F/A for 50 passengers instead of 1 for 33, you don't get a cup of tea anymore, just the mineral water round. Still - it's only 45 minutes.

An hour and five minutes (looking at the schedule), but it seemed a lot longer. Longer than the AKL-WLG flight anyhow.

Yes - they would, and then airfares would go up and then we would have even more to complain about!!!
LOL, I suppose I was meaning that on the whole it's a great improvement on the SAABs, but the inflight service - by necessity - is much more rushed.

Although it may be a little more costly, maybe they could do little prepared trays for those flights of cold stuff only - sealed plastic pot of juice, and crackers and cheese like they did in the 1980s. I want my on-board snack!  Wink

Anyway, they had 2 seats taken out of the Q300 so another F/A would not have to be on board - it's 1 for 50, 2 for 100 I think.

Hopefully, if this new "Frills" gaff works, the second f/a will pay for themselves by flogging off product to a grateful you and me - and as a by-product, increase safety on-board with their presence.

That's a real good idea. I guess something like the old "express mate" which was a cup with a cookie, sugar and milk in it and after you got that the F/A would walk down with tea in one hand and coffee in th other... also had water for those non tea/coffee drinkers...

Air New Zealand enhances domestic in-flight service

Stylish new water bottles and the introduction of wine and beer on selected domestic flights are two enhancements being made to Air New Zealand's domestic service.

From today, customers travelling on Air New Zealand's B737 domestic flights after 4.30pm will be able to purchase a range of beverages and snacks from the airline's new 'Bar Onboard' service.

Customers will also start receiving 300ml Air New Zealand-designed water bottles called 'Koru Spring', which will progressively replace the smaller 100ml water 'pottles' on all B737 domestic services from July.

Air New Zealand Group General Manager Short Haul Airlines Norm Thompson said the new offerings marked an exciting enhancement to the airline's domestic service, and were being introduced to meet the different needs of the travelling public.
