Rumor: BMI LHR-MOW For November Launch

Tue Jun 20, 2006 8:50 pm

Firstly, this is something which has been mentioned to me by a key BMI contact, so there is no actual souce for me to link to so take this at face value.

Apparently the route will be served twice daily from LHR, with the morning flight operated by BMI and the return (late afternoon) operated by UN. Both flights carrying respective flight numbers.

The interesting bit being that another 767 is being considered to operate this and another Middle Eastern route.

Any thoughts?

Likely to be true.
BMI have placed an advert on aviationjobsearch.com for Russian speaking cabin crew and the Russian government recently granted permission to BD to fly into MOW.

Will UN use their own metal, or just code-share with BMI?
BMi are considering using another 767 from LHR to MOS? Whats the point?
1) Their not very likely to fill a 767, especially twice daily, for probably a year or so,
2) They are still recieving 319's aren't they? An a319 and maybe a 320 is plenty for that route, isn' it? (I'm uessing the 321's will be gone by then???)

I heard from friend who handles UN in Moscow, there will 2 flights per day.

BMI with a 321 and UN with 737, each codesharing with each other.

UN's LGW loads are good, if they can fill the 737 into LHR, they may consider switching to a 767.

UN are concerned about LHR as there is more competition, where as LGW they are the only carrier to Moscow, and pick up alot of traffic from connections.

I'm guessing UN is Transaero?
Isn't DME Transaero's base instead of SVO?
If correct, BD/UN/BA will operate to DME, with Aeroflot only operating to SVO.
Incidentally, what do Russians prefer, SVO or DME? It seems most international carriers serve SVO.

This fits with BM's strategy of going for the 4-6 hour sector flights. Egypt and the like are open to research. It allows them to operate either widebody or narrowbody, too, depending upon market size.

BD, BA and UN will serve DME, not SVO.

Well Dammam has been suggested as a further Saudi destination, and would unlikely be suited to a daily service so would see any aircraft operated in conjunction with another service.

They are looking for tags to the DMM service, but flying to DMM with an A321??!! and then on to ?? Muscat? Shahjah? Doha? And you are up against LH A340 and KL 767/330s

Crewing issues makes it impossible to tag via another Saudi point.

Thats the big question - suspect Doha is out after the QR fiasco at LHR, so where instead. With VS joining BA on UAE flights against EK and EH on the other side, I assume Sharjah is out of the question as we don't have seperate bilaterals with the individual kingdoms of UAE like some countries I believe.

Muscat is a contender and probably have the demand for a three/four days a week service in conjunction with DMM. Bahrain is too close to DMM to make sense.

LGW certainly - don't think they ever served LHR. Aeroflot and Pulkovo the only Russian carriers that have IIRC.

BD's flight's into Moscow will comence in Nov, Aircraft to be used will be an A320-200 all A321's will have left the BD fleet by then, as there being replaced by a319's ..

as for taking another 767' not likely to happen - as BD are in talks with LH to lease to A340's for next year, as by early 07 both of the 767's that are in the fleet now will be gone.

Okay so the additional aircraft aspect of what I heard was correct - just got the type wrong.

There is only one B767, leased from TUI (Arkefly), currently operating the routes from LHR to KSA.
