YYC Airport Employment Opportunities

Wed Jun 21, 2006 3:51 am

Hi everyone...

I am curious to know what the employment situation is at YYC? I have been involved on the "supplier" side of the aviation industry (aviagraf dot calm), but would love the chance to do something @ the airport.... anyone have any info on employment opportunities?

yes, the logo was my design, but only that was used in the final design, I posted the idea a while back on M.A.P. :

Hello Rikkus67, I see your from Lethbridge, I am in my 3rd year at U or L at the Calgary campus though! There are lots of opportunities at YYC, espeically ramp stuff if thats what your interested in? Westjet is always hiring ramp workers and thats something I even thought about doing for a year or two! The Avitat and Aerocenter also are always hiring ramp kind of stuff. What kind of work are you interested in?

Hey Mark (?)

Well, I am in transition from YQL to YYC. I'd love the chance at doing something like a gate agent... however (and alas), I am UNILINGUAL...so, that might pretty much forego any chances of that type of position.

By the way...what's U -or- L ? LOL!

WJ, Penauille Servisair, ATS, AC, Avitat, PLH Fuelling... your pretty much guaranteed a job either on the ramp/fbo/csa in yyc. The only thing you have going against you is if you aren't breathing.

I used to be a recruiter for one of the ground handlers and it was like pulling teeth to get employees. Keep in mind WJ and AC only start at pt shifts.

ahhh yes, and that is a factor too..... I don't want to be supplimenting my income by "flipping burgers"...regardless of how starving for employees the restaurant industry here in Calgary is.

...On the other hand, even after 17 years away from Burger King...I can probably still smack together a mean Whopper in under 30 seconds! LOL!

A heads upto you,if your looking to make some decent $$$ avoid PLH and Penuille servisair. On the other hand Shell,Avitat, and Executive flight ctr fuelling pay very well (15-17)bucks per hour to start.PLH is a fueller but the pay scale is weak for some reason,You get flight benefits working with Penuille but the pay is poor. Some of the FBOs also get flight benefits and like I say the pay is well worth the look.
Guess what???I dont like you either...

AC just had a hiring fair for the ramp a couple of weeks ago. They already hired the two classes they wanted, but usually some people wash out for various reasons and they need to hire some more to make up for that. The pay is not what you'd get a place like Shell, Avitat and likes, but AC is hiring permanent and after 6 months you'll get AC employee travel privelages which are second to none in the industry. It never hurts to drop your resume off.

So it really depends what you want, more money? Or unlimited oppurtunities to travel the world?

Hey Kris,

I guess you could say YES to both.

WAAAYY back in the early 80's, I dropped the ball on a major opportunity(which I have mentioned before):

Time Air was just introducing the Dash 8 to their fleet (prior to the Canadi>n takeover). I had always hated the Time Air logo, so I redesigned it with a slight variation on the (at that time, pre-Canadian Partner) current scheme...

Richard Barton(wow...did I get that right?) sent back a signed letter to talk to him about the airline industry, and what I wanted to do...graphic design or airline...If it was airline... come talk to him personally....

...The folks suggested that my managerial position at BURGER KING was probably a better idea....

What were your parents thinking?!?! hehehe

Reminds me of my mother who was offered a job while she was still in High school at the relatively unheard of (at the time) little company called IBM back in the 60's. Her dad didn't let her take the job because he was sure that computers were just a fad... DOH!!

Back on topic: I'd just throw your resume at every airline you can. As far as CSA positions go I think most require (or at least prefer) somebody who is bilingual. There's also a contract company called Wingtips that does check-in/gate for certain airlines. They're probably a good bet if the airlines aren't hiring and you could gain some experience. I think WJ hires CSA's fairly regularly but I'm not sure if you need to be bilingual for them. Probably not considering their target market.

Either way, try to get on with a major airline as much as you can. They all start at the same wage pretty much (majors, LCC's, 3rd party etc.) but in the long run you're much better off at a major, and the employee travel with major airlines can't be beat.

Good luck!

Thanks Kris....

OK, as far as wages go...how close to the 30G mark does anything like that start?
