Who Will Handle Jet Airways' New Flight To LHR?

Wed Jun 21, 2006 6:58 am

As some of you may know, Jet Airways (9W) have announced a new six weekly flight from London to Amritsar (ATQ). However unlike its double daily LHR-BOM and daily LHR-DEL flights, the Amritsar flights will operate from Terminal 4, not Terminal 3.

If I'm not mistaken, United Airlines provide full ground handling to Jet Airways at Heathrow. However with LHR-ATQ operating from Terminal 4, who will provide handling for this flight?

Will UA continue to provide handling by sending staff to T4 for this flight, or will British Airways or KLM provide handling (as they are the only two airlines that provide ground handling for the other airlines in Terminal 4, e.g. BA handle UL and KL handle KQ).

Finally, if UA do not provide handling for this flight, will 9W be the only airline at LHR with different ground handlers for different flights?

Thanks

I think that UA will handle the flight at both terminals. At JFK jetBlue operates from Terminal 6 & 4 do you think that because it is another terminal that they would contract it out. No they just send a crew over there to do the flight.

But terminal 4 is so far from the main United operations. Could it be that United doesn't operate any flights at that time of day and therefore will not provide ground handling? The London-Amritsar is an overnight flight and departs at 9:30pm, which is well after the last United flight of the day. One of the flights to BOM also leaves at a similar time. Does United handle that flight?

Put it this way if you have a contract to handle a airline. No matter where or when thier flight comes to the airport you handle you handle the airline

It is a shame that Jet can't consolidate all its operations in Terminal 3. Does anyone know the reason why it will be split - is T3 really that busy in the evenings? Also, is it not expensive for Jet to have a two terminal operation at LHR, considering they will only have 4 flights a day!

I'd have thought it'd be very impractical to move equipment across from T3 to T4, bearing in mind much of it would have to go across runway 27L/09R... Tugs, FMCs, etc. can't go through the airside tunnel at LHR, I believe.

yes T3 is very busy in the evenings...very very busy! plus as well united will be handling 2 flights for them at that time anyways.

I dont think that jet have enough staff to be honest to be in two terminals but we will see. I asked today and it is KLM handling them.

There is no way UA will handle a flight in T4, the airline would have to pay silly money to UA to even consider it....not going to happen!

I think they will have to use one of the handling companies already in T4. Aviance had this problem when Air Sahara moved terminals, and ended up loosing the contract as they could not get a handling license for T4. I'm sure UA will have the same problem - the BAA won't normally give out a license for a 1/day flight operation in a different terminal to the one where a handler is normally based. Globe Ground had that problem too when SAA wished to move to them a couple of years back, they could not get a license to operate out of T1 and that was a 3/day operation !!.

T4 is almost like a totally different airport from the terminals within the central area.

So i assume that T4 has no ground equipment at thier gates

T4 has alot of ground equipment, but none of it belongs to UA!

It looks like it. I think the aircraft is now in Jet Airways' livery, or is in the process of being repainted.

But if rumours of the 9W / S2 merger falling through are true, Jet will have to operate this flight with one of their new A330s.

Incidentally, the banner on 9Ws website advertising this flight has dissappeared - though it is still bookable.

Does this mean LHR-ATQ will not happen, or will it just mean 9W will operate it with one of their new A332s?
