Varig Reportedly Suspends All Int'l Ops 21/06/2006

Thu Jun 22, 2006 1:40 am

So says www.skyliner-aviation.de , unfortunately the link does not provide any more info. In the fleet movements, it reports 777-2Q8(ER) PP-VRA as seized by ILFC upon completing MUC-GRU-GIG service on 19/20 June.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

Does that mean that PP-VRB will also be seized since it is also owned by ILFC?
Its all about supply and demand...

Honestly, this is really getting tiring... All US (and other intl?) suspended, yet they try to tell people they aren't shut down?

I like RG and will lose a free award ticket (have a bunch of Smiles), but the writing on the wall has been there for way too long. Sad.

MIA-GIG was cancelled this morning out of MIA. Something must be going on...

Snag a ticket on another Star Alliance carrier while you still can. Once it's ticketed, you may even be able to change it to something you actually want to fly later on.

I'm actually missing 1800 miles, and it was (almost) all out of the 55555 Star Alliance Promo, so it's ok. I cashed in 3 tickets, if Smiles are usable with another airline (or even Varig!) in the future, that's great news but I don't feel like pushing it at this moment.

I got a nice LHR-CPH MD-11 flight, three nice awards and have almost another one - if it's there another day in the future, great, if not, too bad. I really hope RG would survive, but keeping it on life support with int'l ops cancelled - let it die.

It is all over the news in Brazil, and on RG´s website.

It has suspended int´l flights to MXP, MUC, MAD, CDG, JFK, LAX, MEX, MVD, ASU and BOG. It has also cut MIA from 2 to one daily flight.

International flights are still being operatade to the following destinations: MIA (daily), FRA (2daily), LHR (daily), EZE (4daily), LIM (daily), SCL (daily), VVI (daily) and CCS (6 weekly).

The domestic network has been reduced to São Paulo (both GRU and CGH), Rio de Janeiro (both GIG and SDU), Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Belém, Manaus, Foz do Iguaçu, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Fernando de Noronha, Florianópolis, Macapá and Brasilia. That means that flights to Belo Horizonte (CNF and PLU), Boa Vista, Goiânia, Natal, Petrolina and Vitória, have also been axed.

Well that is really sad to see such a great and traditional airline die.
Just wondering who will gonna serve the Brazilian market afterwards.
I guess TAM is going to rule the domestic market but who will fly all the international routes out of GRU/GIG???

GOL and TAM will share the domestic market, TAM will probably pick up the Int'l slack once they can get their hands on some a/c, Gol might pick up some more intra- regional international flights, and other international carriers such as TAP, BA, AA, LAN etc will probably be allowed to increase capacity temporaily, until the void left by RG is re-filled. Great news for TAM and GOL- the future looks even more bright than it was before (not that it wasn't bright before!). Sad day for RG- I wish all the RG employees God's choicest blessings...

O Globo ( www.oglobo.com.br ) is obviously following the story quite closely. Very sad images of what was the first airline I ever flew on (and certainly among the best), not unalike those of VASP's final days barely 17 months ago...

O Globo also states that more than 50% of VARIG's flights have been cancelled, and market share is down to <10%.

I hope we will soon see them again at JFK. One of my favorite airlines in the world. I hope somehow things turn around and quickly and that this intense reduction is an act to inspire funding.

Is it true that RG employees have not been paid since April?

I checked in so many pass-riding RG employees while working as a UA CSR; I wish them the very best and hope TAM, GOL and any other airline that picks up the slack takes them into consideration.

It is 10pm (GMT-6) and you can still book a non-stop GRU-MAD-GRU with RG for July (B763). When is RG going to stop selling tickets?? I just purchased a ticket with AR GRU-EZE-MAD-EZE-GRU for US$1,400, but people that haven't heard about RG situation could end up buying a useless ticket!

From our Internal Travel Dept

American Express Global Business Travel has been advised:

Brazilian airline cancels flights:

The embattled Brazilian airline Varig has been forced to cancel 67 of its 180 daily flights amid mounting fears of financial collapse.
The move came just a day after a bankruptcy judge agreed to sell the airline to a consortium of Varig workers and two foreign investors.
This saved Varig from immediate liquidation, but the consortium must now find $75m (£40m) by Friday.
The judge has warned that without this first payment the buyout will fail.
The NV Participacoes, which represents Varig workers and two foreign investors, has agreed to pay $449m for the struggling airline.
Reports in the Brazilian media say it is appealing to Brazil's National Development Bank for a loan to cover the first deposit required for the sale.
Brazil's national airport authority has said it will begin demanding that Varig pays its airport fees every day, in cash.
The news came as the country's civil aviation authorities met other airlines to divide up Varig's routes should it cease to fly.
Increased competition
Varig has been under bankruptcy protection for a year.
It was the top airline in Brazil until 2004, but was then overtaken by TAM and later by Gol.
The airline has suffered years of financial problems because of rising costs and growing low-cost competition.
It now has just 16.7% of the domestic market, but remains the leading Brazilian carrier internationally, with a 66.4% share.

Flights from Brazil to Milan, Munich, Madrid, Paris, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Montevideo, Asuncion and Bogota are temporarily suspended," said the company.

"Flights from Brazil to Frankfurt, London, Buenos Aires, Lima, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Santiago de Chile and Caracas are operating as usual," the company added.
---------------------------------------------------

So I guess we will find out in about 12 to 36 hours as to what further action will be taken.

Miami is not suspended. It is, however, being reduced from 2x to 1x daily. The initial media story took this as Varig was suspending Miami, but that is not the case.

I must say that this really sad news. Although I see both LHR & CPH are not in those destinations to be cut.

I had a fabulous flight on VARIG from LHR to CPH and back in May on PP-VTI. It really was an experience to say the least flying on the MD-11.

I am so pleased that I managed it...it's so rare to get an MD-11 service nowadays and I'll never forget my experience.

As an airline junkie from the time I could stand, I too am sad about Varig's plight. I was fortunate enough to fly Varig last November for the first time in my life from Sao Paulo (CGH) to Rio de Janiero (SDU). The gate agent purposely put my on the left side, and we flew in along the coast past Ipanema Beach, made the sharp left hand turn along Copacabana Beach, flew past the side of SugarLoaf and into a perfect landing. In over 40 years of traveling, it rated as one my of favorite landings. It was tremendous!

Really sad to see this happen to Varig. I jest flew Varig last Thursday from LAX to GRU and can tell you that the service was very good, and I love flying on the MD-11. The flight was also full, not one empty seat available. Also as someone who flies to Sao Paulo alot, thet non stop really makes the flight alot easier. How long do you think it will take for TAM to take over that route??

Copenhagen was not cut along with AMS and LIS. - RG operated LHR-CPH this Sunday, but the leg from LHR to CPH was cancelled yesterday. Local sources indicates that a decision to continued the leg from LHR or not will be taken this weekend.

I guess you do not have to worry about them because:
- many of them have a place to stay in Europe,
- many of them can probably afford a first class ticket on another airline, and
- there is another airline that it proud to be Brazilian. So I guess they would be proud to bring back the most famous Brazilians stars as well (of course only if they got world champion )

According NOS (Dutch News Network):

"Varig leaves passengers out in the cold,

Brazilian Airline Varig hasn't executed 118 of its daily 189 flights yesterday June 22nd. The 79-year old company lacks money, even fuel and landing fees cannot be paid.

So far, passengers are picked up by other airlines, but there is a possibility that a chaos occurs. Thousands of Brazilians flew into Germany with Varig to visit the soccer World Championship.

A group of Varig-workers is trying to save the company by buying it for 357 million euros (= 446 million dollars). Therefore, the judge demands a down payment of 60 million euros (= 75 million dollars). It is not sure if the group of Varig-workers is able to raise the money."

- many of them can probably afford a first class ticket on another airline, and

I would not worry about the team. Ronaldo is not the only one who has enough money to charter a private jet. I'd worry about the fans who may be left with a worthless ticket back home.

Still RG operated a special flight last night from CGN.
