American Airlines At BHX?

Thu Jun 22, 2006 11:01 pm

Hi!

Can anybody tell me when AA flew to BHX and where to, the reason being that I found one of their aircraft at Birmingham on Google Earth.

See the aircraft at BHX here

Thanks!

AA flew JFK-BHX for several years, I think they stopped a couple of years ago.

They flew 767s IIRC, I remember going in the late nineties on a sunny day, while the sun reflected off the fuselage straight into the old viewing gallery!

I know they were definitely there in 1997-1998, not sure when they started though.

Chicago, AFAIK.

In the db here there are photos from 1998 to 2002, so that probably covers the time frame.

http://icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk/...full%26siteid=50002-name_page.html

"Brum to Chicago route back on agenda
Jun 30 2005"

"American Airlines executives are giving serious consideration to re-opening direct daily flights between Birmingham and Chicago, three years after the service was axed."

"AA pulled the plug on its Birmingham flights in October 2002, blaming the business community for not using the service enough. Too many executives preferred to travel to America via Heathrow, it was claimed."

American flew between their huge Chicago O'Hare hub and Birmingham, England from around 1992 up until a few years ago (I think 2002-2003). The flight was operated for years with a 767-200 in the winter, and 767-300 in the summer, but after 9/11, the route could not longer sustain nonstop service, and as AA began pulling the 767-200s off international routes, it didn't make sense to "waste" a 767-300 on the BHX route when it could be more profitably used somewhere else.

On the 757.  Wink

The ORD-BHX was a fairly senior route for FA's.

Probably not, the 757 quip was for the JFK-BHX remark.

Poor Newcastle, its has been on the list of cities being considered for new service for so long at CO, yet the service never materializes. maybe next year?

How so? We have a daily flight to BHX from EWR in the winter. It leaves at 0900 and arrives at 1155. It gives many opportunities for connections throughout our whole system.

Hello back!

Quoting Concorde001 (Reply 16):

Have yet to go to BRS...

LGW (we get free travel, as working crew to LGW, on the Gatwick Express - while it is still around), MAN (great Indian food), GLA (good food and - being Scottish myself - gotta love kilts, EDI (see comment for GLA), BFS (amazed how many restaurants it has) and then BHX. Food is a priority for me. I figure it takes a lot of food to maintain my shape. Big grin

I am hopelessly addicted to British television. It's why I am a big fan of the UK. Thank goodness for BBC America.

I am looking forward to other cities we are *rumored* to be flying to, such as NCL and LBA.

From talking to their crews, it was because of the quaintness of the surrounding BHX areas. Stratford-upon-Avon is close by, it is where we stay. The theater in S-u-A, the antique shopping. Plus, at the time, it was a decent trip to work (customer and hour wise).

Yes, daily 757 service. Just being considered for now, who knows what will happen.

Thought that CO had pretty much got this route them selves.
With there various connections etc

With there being a daily service and then a second service which operates 3 - 4 days a week.

But if the demand is there for another New York flight then let AA join the party.

Will be nice to see another USA carrier into BHX.

Would DL be considering JFK-BHX with all their JFK expansion at the moment?

The connecting possibilities with DL @ JFK doesn't compare to CO @ EWR.
BHX-NYC may be a very limited market for another airline.
ATL-BHX makes more sense and it might be flown with a B757.

By the way I did the homework:
For a B757, ORD-BHX is 6233Km, EWR-Berlin 6428Km; Berlin is one of CO European destinations currently flown with B757, so this could mean BHX may be flown by AA B757 from ORD.

1. Bring on the winglets.

2. Its tight: from an operational viewpoint EWR-Berlin is a tough route, especially eastbound in the summer (yes summer) when EWR gets screwed up with ATC delays and thunderstorms. Flying a tight route like this out of ORD is just as difficult.

3. My guess is that if AA is really interested in going back to BHX, it will be out of ORD (once again) with a 763ER.

But they do compare to AA @ JFK. Therefore I think DL would do better as a second airline on BHX-NYC

Hi concorde001.. hows it going..

Yes more US carriers at BHX would be nice.. and im also hoping poor ol' NCL finally gets its NYC route..

With NWA bouncing around rumours of more british routes and DL/AA planning expansion with their 757's .. the next few years might start getting a little interesting for some of the regional airports.

Personally I agree that AA may find it hard to fill an acft on the JFK route especially with CO connections from the otherside of the river.

myself I would like to see

DL - ATL (A lot of Fla. traffic would probably route thru their, especially Disney)
NW - Detroit (most likely to put AA off starting ORD )
AA - JFK (I could see a 757 service working)

Before I get shot down I announce the following ...........................  white

Would there be a chance of an EMA - NYC route by AA or DL in the future??? I know they wouldnt get CO because of them being established down the road but the possabilities are there.

None - or from anyone else unless local government in the East Midlands can find some decent funding to attract an airline with a subsidy a la EDI, BRS, BFS, transatlantic services....

Quoting BHXDTW (Reply 29):

Unlikely - doesn't fit in with the predominantly UK family package market to Florida. How many UK passengers don't fly directly to Florida with scheduled or charter - very few i imagine and in terms of families almost none i suspect.

large companies are requesting services to NYC from all 3 counties, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire and there is a possability of going to the local governments but do you think it could be sustainable if one did start? or would the competition with BHX kill it?

Actually I know of 3 families who have flown from MAN to Florida via ATL

I know they book it as part of a package... like a fly drive so I guess they wouldnt be the only people as part of a package..
Your very true tho, I doubt there would be enough to warrant the direct ATL flight.. but along with corporate travel I think a 757 would fit nicely with the MAN widebody service.

If CO really wants to establish themselves as the #1 Choice for U.S. Travel from anywhere in the UK, then EWR-EMA, EWR-LBA, EWR-LPL, EWR-CWL, EWR-NCL, EWR-ABZ and EWR-STN won't be as silly as some people would think.
But I don't know if for CO, Robin Hood Airport would be more attractive than EMA.
