Rumor: AV Starting MDE-FLL Or BOG-SJU

Fri Jun 23, 2006 1:21 am

Take this with a grain of salt. I just wanted to post this and see what everybody thinks.

I was searching at Google for some inespecific airline-related info and decided to take a look at Wikipedia's description about Avianca.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avianca [see Destinations]

Much to my surprise, I found this:

"Recently in a press interview Avianca said that it is thinking of starting a new flight from Medellín to Fort Lauderdale. They also said that they are thinking of starting a new flight from Medellín to San Juan, Puerto Rico via Bogotá. Flights are anticipated to begin in December of 2006."

I then continued my search, and found that these "new routes" even have an apparent launch date.

Considering how Wikipedia works, could we really be seeing a couple of new routes by Avianca? Just for the record, up to yesterday there was still nothing listed on Avianca.com. Nothing on reservation systems either.

FLL from MDE could make some sense giving the Colombian population in South Florida, best would be if AV is going to operate that flight on a weekend only basis just to start.
SJU from BOG, I don't know how well would it perform. Aces used to fly to SJU but at that time combined with SDQ and not daily.

ACES modified its Caribbean network on several occasions based on demand, but BOG-SJU-BOG was operated nonstop both ways most of the time during the 90s. I flew with them to San Juan back in 1998 and that's indeed how it was.

You are right though, the flight was not daily, but only 3 times a week.

If AV were to eventually launch BOG-SJU, it would be logical to do so under a similar pattern.

I would think that they would start a second daily MIA-MDE before FLL-MDE. Although their FLL-BOG service is popular and profitable, the yields are marginal and most of the money is made on cargo and passengers connecting, especially to Ecuador and Peru.

Maybe BOG-MCO could work better if there are good connections to/from other Southamerican AV destinations and I would guess AV has thought about MCO (or even SFB) before.
I doubt a BOG-MCO flight will work only based on O/D traffic and yields could be worse than on FLL-BOG flights. Please notice that a Latinamerican airline from a neighbouring country flying to MCO doesn't depend at all on O/D but on the passengers they get from their hub.

IIRC, P5 had rights on that route, but of course, never flew it.

I know this is off-topic, but with Rgs actual situatuin, maybe AV would like to get a hold of one of their 767s fro their new routes. I know they have a "new" 767, the AM ac, that has the "Colombia es Pasion" logo.

Whos 767s????

As wikipedia can be very irregular, we can not take this statement as true or even a reliable rumour, we dont know who wrote it so its just info on a public webpge, though this two routes have big possibilities of starting.

Talking about new routes , I flew between SFO-LAX and at the moment of taxing in LAX , I saw AV 767-200 standing with all the Asian airlines  cry  .

anyways , I think MCO is a great destination , especially because of all the Colombian community in Orlando . It sucks when you have to go to MIA to catch a flight to Colombia

Will AV have to ask P5 for those BOG-MCO rights? If it's so, if AV is to ask for SFB instead, would that airport be considered other than MCO and have no problems with those unused P5 rights?

Several Latinamerican communities in Tampa are actually bigger in number than in Orlando, but TPA lacks the amount of leisure passengers that MCO do attract.
If given the choice, Latinamerican airlines will fly 1st to MCO and then - if ever - to TPA.

To be honest, I wouldn't know much on this issue, even more, probably those rights were lost by P5 and maybe taken over CO or DL and replaed MCO by IAH or ATL? IIRC, on the time of those rights, VX got the FLL rights, thing is that P5 focused more on its national routes and improve its charter services to the caribbean (I remember flying to Havanna with them).

Agree 100%. Many colombian tourist have to fly to MIA or FLL and then drive to MCO, which after a 6 hr trip (including 3 hrs of chekin before the flight) and all the hassle in inmigration, would change the day for many parents with small children (Of course, those of us headed to amussement parks).

BTW, I think I read in a thread that an airline in Venezuela either flies or was planning in flying to MCO. Anyone knows anything about it?

if AV starts flight to Orlando than only to MCO and not SFB, at MCO they could offer some good connections with there partner Delta.

That is why AA flies six daily mainline jets on MIA-MCO. Unfortunately, the yield is not at all there like the traffic is for Orlando-LatAm service to be very substainable. Many airlines - American Airlines, Varig, TransBrasil, Aeropostal, LANChile, and others - have tried.

Perhaps w/agressive advertising and attractive fares the SJU market would work. AV has flown to SJU several times back in the 70s, 80s w/747's to/from Europe and a combination of 727-100 via BAQ. Later they tried again w/762 several times a week continuing to FRA. Back in the 70s/80s the routes worked since there weren't too many choices for Puertorican travelers on the markets served by AV. Now w/COPA and AA connections I am not sure...perhaps using a smaller jet even F100s...in order for it to work AV would need to offer a wide choice of connections to lure paxs away from MIA or from flying COPA to South America. Keep in mind COPA flies daily to SJU, I doubt AV will fly daily.
