Jobs For Foreigners At Mexican Airports?

Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:27 am

To my friends the Avioncitos...

My wife (who is from Mexico) and I will probably be moving to Mexico within the next several years. All of my wife's family is from Mexico City, so we will probably move to that area, but would consider other areas as well.

My question is, how hard is it for a U.S. ex-patriate to get a job at a Mexican airport? I know there are pretty strict rules about foreigners getting work. I have 27 years of airport experience, ranging from public relations, operations, noise abatement, etc. But most of my experience is in airport dispatching and security (monitoring of access control systems, closed circuit television systems, use of radio and telephone systems, etc.) My Spanish is decent.

What are my chances? I have been at RNO for 25 years and two years at MHT before that, but I would really like to work at a large hub airport. I just love the widebodies and the international flights, and we just don't get those things at RNO. I love MEX for its excitement and diversity, no matter what anyone says about needing to expand it or replace it.

Hell, I would even consider volunteering in an information booth or something like that at a later point in time when I was able to collect my RNO pension.

¡Saludos y mil gracias!

If you haven't already, get your mexican naturalization papers. It made the paperwork so much easier for me. You can do this in any mexican consulate in the states. Pretty much it is (or was, I got mine in 1997) a mexican birth certificate. Chances nowadays are it's different. You should also receive a CURP and RFC and all that other stuff.

Indeed, first thing you have to do is your naturalization papers. It will be very easy to obtain them as your wife is Mexican!!! Just reading all the experience you have in the industry I would be more than happy to have you on my team (if I were something big at MEX), more over, as a mexican who has travelled abroad and seen how US or European airports work, would like to have you contributing to change some stupid procedures and ideas some authorities have at my home town airport. Issue here is that you'll have to go and knock on several doors despite all that experience you might have, but I'm sure you could make it. Finally, more than happy to know we'll have a new member on the Avioncitos Meetings!!! Bienvenido a tu nueva casa, México!!!

Ghost and HMO-- I'll be away from this forum for at least a day, so for now I want to thank you both for your helpful, thoughtful replies.

Thanks again!
