What Were The Routes Of BA L1011-500's?

Sun Jun 25, 2006 6:44 am

Hi!

I remember when I visited UK in 1980 and spotted at LHR Car Park Nr. 3 to see a few BA L1011-500's! Most of us know that BA used quite briefly the Dash 500 model, but just for my curiosity ( and maybe other true aviation fans ) in what routes did BA used the L1011-500? I saw a few pictures of the 500 model in the A.Net engine and at least 3 of them were taken in France......did BA used a plane with the range of the 500 model in flights to France?????That's quite unbelievable!!!

BA was the launch customer for the Tristar 500.They ordered six of the type and were delivered from Apr 1979. They were all sold to the RAF in Mar 1983. They operated to Abu Dhabi and Singapore. Also to Mexico City via New Orleans.
After selling them to the RAF, British Airtours leased one back during 1983 and again in the summer of 1985.
Two Air Lanka Tristar 500s were leased by BA from 1985-88 to operate to South America.

LHR-MSY-MEX

I remember seeing that Tristar at least 3 times a week coming in to land at MEX, just over my house. It was a beautiful plane in a fantastic livery.

G-BLUS and G-BLUT were the two leased -500's

They were also used to fly LHR-BWI for a while.

I flew on a BA L-1011 from JFK-GLA once, but I'm not sure if it was a L-1011-250 or a -500? Great flight though, we exited the aircraft in GLA via the "right" forward #1 door via portable stairs no jetway! That's the only time I've ever left an airplane from the right. What a fantastic airplane!

I could not have been a -250 because BA never flew them. They did operate their -200's on the JFK-GlA route .

They also served DTW, but I don't know if it was non-stop to LHR at the time.

Wasn't there a really exotic Tristar routing to Hong Kong, with about five stops en route? And BA definitely flew JFK to GLA and JFK to MAN with the Tristar. London to Detroit went, I believe, via either Philadephia or Pittsburg (Philly, I think).

Most likely one of the eight -200 in the fleet.

I'm not sure if it was a -500, but I remember on a trip to Israel in 1987 with my family ,I saw a BA L1011 at TLV .

I was 11 and that was the first time I saw a Tristar. At that time in Argentina DC-10 were very common, Swissair,Iberia,Alitalia,Varig,Eastern,Viasa. But the L-1011 was a rarity.
Imagine how powerful that image was, that almost 20 years later, I still remember it clearly.

Flew one of the leased-from-Air Lanka BA -500s from LHR to Trinidad in 1986. It was continuing to Bogota or Cali I believe.

In November '87 I was on a BA L15 from DTW to LHR with stop in YMX. It had 3-3-3 seating, unlike DL, EA and PA L10s with 2-5-2.

Not sure if it was a -500, but flew with a BA L1011 at the end of the eighties LHR- AUH (I think)-MNL.
Excellent flight going, and better returning, as we had been upgraded to business.

In the late 80s I flew on a BA L1011 from LHR to CDG, it used to do the regular shuttle service at the time. On the return leg got to sit in the cockpit during the landing. Very unnerving when taxiing back to T4, upon reaching the runway we needed to cross the pilot looked out of the window and then called - 'anything your side'. The flight was a birthday present, at the time BA operated a scheme whereby you purchased a ticket dirt cheap and was then told upon arrival at LHR where you were going, it was literally fly you there, let you walk round for 30 mins and then fly you back!

I remember those! You had to turn up at a certain desk at LHR TI at something like 8 in the morning, they then told you where and when you were flying(usually CDG or AMS) .We got a 4pm departure to AMS on a 757 . Just enough time for once around the duty free shop in AMS then back on the plane much to the suprise of the cabin crew who had said good-bye to us 20 mins earlier!

Like already mentioned, BA only had -1, -50, -100 (flying for Caledonian) and -500.

Cedarjet,
BA did use their Tristars in the mid 80s for a Manchester-Munich-Dubai-Bangkok-Hong Kong routing. It was twice a week, I dont think the service lasted more than a year.
What a fantastic routing to have these days, if only...

My dad used to work in Saudi Arabia back in the 80's and used to fly the BA L1011's alot. He also used to fly BCAL on the Dc-10 and on BA 747's when they were on the routes to Saudi too (he used to fly to Dhahran and Jeddah), and he said the L1011 was his favourite a/c that he ever flew on the routes being much more comfortable than the others.

BA had at least 3 tristars 1s based at LHR during the mid/late 1980s from memory, and they used to operate them to CDG,ATH and TLV and MUC during winters. When i went to what is now the old MUC airport during Feb 1987 for a days planespotting,
BA L1011-1 G-BBAF was there when i arrived from LGW onboard Britania Airways B737-200 G-AXNC. BA did regularly use the Tristar 1s on the late evening departure to TLV and this aircraft whould return back to LHR around midday the following day. The Registrations for the 3 Tristar 1s that i saw regularly at LHR where G-BBAF/BBAG and BBAH.

I remember back in 1984, when I was not very old at all I flew a BA Tristar LHR-DOH-CCU (and the flight carried onto DAC) The DOH stopover was for fuel, so I doubt it was a -500 series T-bird.

Actually, i'll correct myself. Gatwick-Dallas was operated with the DC10, not sure if the L1011-500 ever flew the route.
