Southwest 737 Over My House In PHX

Mon Jun 26, 2006 11:56 am

About 5 mins ago a Southwest 737 went over my house (nr 15th Ave & Mcdowell) really low. It had the gear down and looked like it was about to land at PHX in an easterly direction, but it had just come from the direction of PHX. I've never seen one this far north of the airport.

Anyone any info? Aborted landing maybe due to weather conditions?

The winds this evening were pretty wild. I was outside about 630 or so and the wind was nasty and dust was everywhere.

I've seen lately when the winds are a bit weird that there will be some odd approaches/departures from Sky Harbor. Last time we had rain (what 2 or 3 weeks ago) I was at work near Cental and Thomas and saw a couple planes headed south, not their normal patterns.. that's probably what you saw today.... with the winds and dust whipping around they gave them an unusual approach...

You were probably seeing it trying to line back up after a go around. We had a couple of those tonight do to the dust and high winds. Its getting to be that time of year again.

Hi guys...

It seems weird to hear of any real wind issues** at PHX! My grandparents moved from Minneapolis to Phoenix WWAAYYY back in '69. Both are gone now. I spent many summers down in Phoenix, and as I grew older spent countless hours going back and forth on 24th street watching the aircraft landings between both runways.

Living in Calgary, Alberta, CANADA... there is always a wind factor involved in T/O and landings, being so close to the Rocky Mountains. Unlike PHX though, there are intersecting, rather than parallel runways, so any crosswinds, you don't have a choice to change direction.

I would imagine with the high temps and geographically being in the volcanic valley (always loved the red "dirt")... that can have an effect on windspeed.

** One season that I wasn't usually around for was monsoon season. How bad is the wind and storms effect on T/O and landings at that time of the year?

Yea, Just across the border in ABQ we got some of those 45 mph gust's and the temp dropped from 89F to 59F in a matter of minuits.

45MPH....hmmm...a brisk breeze here! We can easily get gusts of 70mph here (and even stronger in my hometown of YQL-Lethbridge)...

It was pretty wild in Ahwatukee. I think it was a diversion to TUS.

That happens here in AZ in July. Except the dew points do go 55F or higher.
