Where's Primaris

Mon Jun 26, 2006 1:58 pm

Hey, I was just wondering (and I'm sure someone knows), what's up with Primaris Airlines? The last pic of their 757 was quite a while ago, as was any word of what was up with them. I'm just wondering if they are operating, and if so, where to. If not, why not?

I think they recently lost their 787 slots and the never firmed up anything including any of the 737s they ordered. They still have one 757. Their website hasn't been upated since Jan 2005. Wikipedia said they are starting service in 4th quarter 2006 (a date that already slipped one year from their earlier pronouncements) but its surprising not to have heard anything at this point. I'd say they never got the money. I'd bet they are dead as a scheduled airline.

The latest I know on Primaris Airlines is that their current sole B757 is leased to Santa Barbara Airlines.

Primaris plans to begin operating scheduled flights mostly from New York to several other destinations sometime in the 4th quarter of 2006 or 1st quarter of 2007 when they start taking delivery of their 20 brand-new B738's. The 20 B788's that they have on order, are to be delivered beginning in 2008. So obviously they'll operate an all-Boeing fleet.

Here is a list of the cities they'll serve by year:

2006 routes: New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco

2006 routes: New York to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Atlanta

Second Quarter, 2007 routes:New York to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, and London

Fourth Quarter, 2007 routes: New York to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, London, Manchester, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt

2009 routes (After the delivery of the 787: New York to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London to New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco

Beyond 2009: Expansion to Beijing, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Sydney, and Tokyo

So as you know, their main HUB will be located in the New York area.

That is pretty much all I know about Primaris right now, & I don't know if they are still in operation or not, as to what MrComet mentioned above.

JOE.  Smile

Boeing's unfilled orders list does not have any Primaris planes on order. If not on order now, it would be highly unlikely they will get any planes for years. They would be at the back of the line with respect to slots and pricing.

If they planned to be flying in September/October, they would also be booking flights now. A look at Google and other news sources shows they are nowhere to be found.

They could come up with leased planes and start but if they were serious they'd be talking to the press building interest and momentum. They disappeared almost immediately after the 787 announcement. Could be they overplayed their hand and pissed off some backers. Or it could have been a last minute attempt to draw attention and backers. Anyway, they recent decrease in the committments numbers by Boeing is probably a pretty good sign Boeing doesn't think its going to happen.

The 787 program should be grateful, though. They made a big stink and it helped to get the momentum rolling. Boeing benefited and now those slots are pretty necessary so no one loses....except Primaris.

They'd have to actually have ordered them first.

Ditto.

They served their purpose by getting Boeing some early publicity for the 787. The only question in my mind is whether Boeing were in on it as a PR stunt from the start. scratchchin

Yeah, they were such a big deal because of their 787 order, but then they seemed to just randomly vanish.

Me too...  Silly

There must be some flight-attendants or pilots around, knowing whats going on!

I think, they figuered out, that they would never will have a chance to survive, after MaxJet, EOS and (soon) SILVERjet already started intercont "biz-service"!

Darn! It was so cool to see that 757 when it began flying. I was shooting with John Thompson at LAS and it went by on 25L. I screwed the pic up but he nailed it.

I was wondering what happened. Oh well, would have loved to see more of that airline.

As American777 said, Primaris's sole 757-200 is currently wet-leased to Santa Barbara Airlines from Venezuela.

It is flying 12x weekly between CCS and MIA. It is based in MIA.

I had the pleasure to fly that beautiful bird on September 2005. If anyone wants to read my experiences in both coach and business, take a look at these trip reports:

It's not actually a wet lease. The aircraft, while operating for Santa Barbara, is still operated by Primaris. Primaris dispatchers dispatch it and Primaris crews fly it. Its a long term charter contract similar to what Thomas Cook had or has with Apple Vacations. Primaris is an interesting idea but in reality it looks more like a tax write-off for some wealthy people. It wouldn't surprise me that the original 787 announcement was just a PR stunt to aid Boeing as there are some former congressman that are involved with Primaris. I'm not saying that the 787 couldn't stand on its own but the orders would've come a little slower I think without the Primaris order, at least until the aircraft actually flies.

May I ask what's your definition of wet lease?

In a wet lease, the lessor provides the required crew, maintenance, insurance to operate the plane.

In this particular case, both pilots are indeed Americans and Primaris employees (I had the chance to visit the cockpit and have a chat with them) while the FA's are Venezuelans and Santa Barbara employees.

Santa Barbara also has its own personnel in MIA to staff its counters.

Sadly, the 757 will soon no longer fly for Santa Barbara because Venezuela is FAA CAT I again so Venezuelan carriers will be again able to fly their own metal to US airports and not depend on wetleased planes from US carriers.

Whoops, you're correct Luis. I stand corrected. I guess I should look a little more carefully at some of these things before posting. At least I admit when I'm wrong!  Wink
