Mysterious Boeing 777 In HAM

Mon Jun 26, 2006 8:29 pm

When I flew to HAM last Friday I saw an N-registered Boeing 777 (guess it was a 200 version) in an all white colour scheme with a boring blue stripe.

They towed the plane from Lufthansa Technic to the edge of RWY 23 where they drove several circles with the push truck (about for 45 minutes).

Does somebody know something about this plane and the reason why the made so many turns (perhaps calibration?????

Thanks!

No, it was a broken blue stripe under the windows which went to the tail end.
The blue stripe was also painted in the middle of the rudder + N registered.

Perhaps it was repainted??

Thanks!

Thanks !

It's owned by Wells Fargo a/c Leasing as to who it is leased to I have no idea.

Would it have anything to do with WC 2006? I can imagine that hoards of mysterious aircraft at German airports wouldn't be unusual during this time.

You can see it on the ramp in Hamburg. Today at 11:30 there were 1 BBJ, 1 BBJ2 and 2 G-V, which is already a bit. But the 777-200 was at Lufthansa Technik, so I assume it was there just for some regular maintenance (doesn't exclude that this was coupled with somebody being brought to the World Cup).

IIRC LHT is a subcontractor (for Hawker Pacific ?) for overhauling 777 landing gears. This might explain the circles, probably to test the landing gear.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

I believe it in use by Saad Hariri's Lebanese government. I have only seen it once in Beirut, but I know it's been spotted there more frequently of late due to his return to the country.

VP-BRH is, which is the aircraft seen in the top picture in this thread - however, the aircraft in question is N777AS and was the aircraft seen in Hamburg.

Talking about HAM: I lay awake in the night from sun 25 to mon 26 June due to a thunderstorm. At approx. 01:33am, I noticed a rather large plane flying away from HAM airport southwards.

I live south of the airport, between Underground stations Wartenau and Ritterstrasse. It is not unusual to see approaching planes passing east of our garden, towards rwy 033. But it would be unusual to see them starting in that direction, especially at 01:33, in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Of course, I was not able to identify the a/c through the curtains. Looked big, though, probably widebody. Does anybody have an idea who that was?

Well,I sure hope the CIA does not have anything to do with that. But who else could override the night curfew, especially since there no mailflights Sun/Mon.

My first thought, too...  Wink

What also seemed unusual: even though it was heading away from the airport, it was still quite low. I would guess that a starting plane should have been higher already at that point. Did someone divert into HAM that night, and maybe had to perform a go-around due to the thunderstorm?

Why do you get so nervous on a sarcastic remark? I could not care less who and what flies over my country and I made this joke bvecause of all the fuss made around that theme. But I do not want to open this can of worms, so usually if a plane flies/takes off during curfew times it must be one of the few exemptions, and that is usually Government/head of state of MEDEVAC. The VIP Reeperbahn tourist would rather go to AMS these days so that is ruled out but we have a soccer championship in the country, so it might have been Roman Abramovich in his private 767.

Are the main boogies of the B777 steerable by some degrees?

Thanks!

Yes, the rear pair of wheels are steered, but it is hardly noticeable. They turn about 7deg each way.

I flew out of HAM on the morning of June 24, and noticed a Bahrain Govt 747-400 at LH Technik. Maybe that's what you heard? I think it was this one, unless they have more than one with the same paintjob (wavy red flag on the tail):

I also saw the 777 mentioned in this thread (N777AS) while we were taking off -- it was not visible to me from the observation deck. There was another big-ish plane at LH Technik (I'd say 757-sized). I could only see its tail, which was blue with a yellow circle (no, not an LH jet!)...

As mentioned by someone else, there were quite a few other private jets parked on the apron that morning -- a pair of BBJs, and at least 2 G-V's -- probably in town for the World Cup.

N777AS is with LHT at HAM since at least half a year, if not longer, nobody really knows what shes doing here tough.

In a local aviation forum it's also mentioned taht we had 3 departures between 0050 and 0110 on monday morning but nobody knows which and what kind of flights they were

I once worked at N777AS. The crew is very friendly and the interiour... My oh my. I see her at HAM or in Paris very often. The best thing: I have the Navkit of this plane! It's really great for my flight simulator. The whole world at Jeppesen charts. That's expensive... they wanted to throw the charts away. I asked the flight engineer and I got it! As well as 777-Pin and a nice phot of me inside. I had a nice week together with the flight engineer and we joined a lot of time together. BTW: He speaks English very well as he is from Kansas...

He means flying engineer. Most big private jets carry a mechanic on board.
