El Al To Fly Daily To Hong Kong And Beijing

Mon Jun 26, 2006 10:47 pm

Ynetnews.com reports that LY plans to start flying daily to both Hong Kong and Beijing within less than two years. The articles quotes LY's Vice CEO, Uri Danor, as saying that the "Hong Kong's line is extremely successful and the flights are in high capacity." He was also quoted as saying that "the line supports businessmen traveling to Hong Kong, as well as to connection flights to destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and the Philippines." The article also reports that LY plans to dedicate one of the 777s that it will receive in 2007 to the HKG route, while the other will fly on routes to the United States. The Vice CEO also told Ynetnews that LY plans to increase flights to Beijing because it is "predicting a huge change in the traffic between China and Israel", and "This change will justify a daily flight to China." LY is also contemplating a new route to Shanghai. The article made no mention of LY's plans to start scheduled flights to Japan in September 2006.

Yes, especially since their focus is to increase and improve service to long haul destinations in the Far East and North America. Hopefully, nonstop flights to ORD is the next priority. I am surprised that LY believes that Beijing will support a daily flight within two years. I wonder if LY will add more flights to BOM. LY flights to BOM should attract both business travellers and tourists.

A new 777 coming in next year will allow the 762 used on MIA-TLV to be transfered to ORD-TLV non-stop, while MIA-TLV will double to 4x weekly and get a 777. That is the latest, reliable rumours.

Maybe not BOM but BLR or HYD?
Even though domestic flights in India are very good, a vast part of LY traffic to India is business men, and there's a lot of high tech business in BLR, and HYD.

Who will be the LY partner providing those connection flights?

Maybe QF? They have some sort of FF program cooperation - but maybe more will follow.

How would they route the flights? Is it shorter to fly over Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan to China or the other way over the Red sea, the Indian Ocean and on?

The article doesn't say. However, these are not new routes. LY is increasing frequencies on its existing routes to Hong Kong and Beijing. I guess that they would continue flying along the same flight path that they currently use.

Weren't they originally using the recently acquired 763 on TLV-MIA?

The Great circle route TLV-HKG takes you straight over the middle of Iran. Does Iran allow Israeli overflights or will some creative routing be needed?

My understanding is that Iran and many Arab and Islamic countries do not allow flights to or from TLV on any airline to overfly their territories.

The TLV - MIA is on 762. The recently leased 763 would have payload restrctions on that route.
