Continental Air Adds Second Daily Service to Israel's Tel Aviv

Houston, June 19 (Bloomberg) -- Continental Airlines Inc., the fifth-largest U.S. airline, will add a second non-stop flight to Tel Aviv from New York, beginning June 20.

Continental first began its service to Israel last August, with a 283-seat Boeing 777 aircraft, flying from New Jersey's Newark International Airport. The second daily flight will also be a Boeing 777.

Houston-based Continental Air serves more than 8.5 million customers a year and has more than 2,200 departures daily.

Is Bethune and Company taking a stab at TW, and if they are will it be a deathblow? ACVitale says that JFK-TLV is profitable for TW, so why doesn't the STL based carrier meet CO's aggression and introduce another 767 daily?

It's not aggression, it's purely economics. Continental has a large hub,
with close to 400 daily flights out of Newark, so it can easily fill 2 777's
a day to Tel Aviv. TWA's operations at JFK are skeletal at best, although
they are growing again for the first time in years. Continental probably
doesn't look at TWA as much competition from the New York area. One
would have to ask why AA or DL do not add a JFK-TLV flight?

What would you rather spend 10-12 hours flying in? A 767-300ER or a
777-224ER?

I sincerely doubt that TWA "dominates" the US-Israel market either.
Continental has been flying one 777 since August of 1999, with 245
or so seats, vs. TWA's single 767-300ER, 218 seats.

Second, El Al probably dominates the market. It flies multiple 747
and 767 flights from many US airports.

On the past DL did fly to TLV for some time, They stoped the services after a big prices war with LY, this had cause them nothing but losing money on the route and they cut off the services,
I dont remember exactly, but i think that all DL's flights to TLV were with a stop at CDG, that had made the flights less convenient compared to LY's flights, I think that the services were ceased at 1994, they used to fly it with a 767's and MD11's.
maybe if someone has more details aboute the flights he can share it with us?

Anyways, as of tomorrow, June 21, Co will fly twice a day EWR-TLV-EWR,
dont expect any harm nor at TW and nor at LY (at least not on the summer months),
the loads on this line are very high, each flight is full and we are talking about 4-5 747's, 1 763, 1 M11, 2 777's flights each day!!!
in case you didnt understand, the demand is enormous,
at LY they dont have enough planes to reply for the demend on this summer, so they decided to lease a MD11 from World Airways, and last week i heared that the airline will lease a 743 (!) for the route also.

It will be interesting to see if passengers will switch from El Al and their daily 747-400 to Continental's 777-224ERs. El Al is well known for its gerat service and PTVs in their 747-400s.

Actually, El Al is known for its great service lately. The airline has had a total makeover in the recent past. They are known to have the best service on the TLV-JFK (and EWR) route, notwithstanding the lousy FF program.
