CO 737 Aborted Landing At SJC. Info?

Tue Jun 27, 2006 3:02 am

I landed in SJC last night (6/25) and was driving my rental out of the airport. At exactly 10:02 p.m., I was sitting at a traffic light right by the runway and I noticed that a CO 737 was coming in pretty high. Even though I'm not a pilot, I know the approach to that runway and this bird was high. Right above the runway, I noticed that it stopped its descent and climbed again. It veered left (west) and regained altitude.
The light turned green and I drove away. I have no clue how to get this info. Does anyone know what happened? I'm simply curious.

Sounds like it came in high and they went around. Should this make the newspapers? I don't see why...

Probably just too high of an approach... Then when the pilot realized that he was too steep he figured he wouldn't have enough runway to stop so he aborted his landing, he would have also been high maybe to escape jet wash or wake turbulence from an aircraft that might have passed the runway or something, once at SNA we came in for 19L and tower advised us of possible wake turbulence from a 757 that just departed from the parallel and also from a 737 that was moving into position and hold on 19R so we came in really high and I mean REALLY high, once we floated on to the ground we realized that we didn't have enough room to stop so we notified the tower that we were going around. No big deal really, happens alot. Hope this helps your plight  smile

The weather about 10 minutes prior looks great doesn't show any gusty winds that might have precipitated the go-around. Other possible causes might have been another aircraft ahead of him not clearing the runway fast enough, but your observation of his being too high is just as likely if not more so...

Remember that SJC has displaced thresholds on 30L/R so their relative altitudes may seem high compared to the physical end of the runway. However, I've seen Southwest 737s come in pretty high before and descend rapidly to join the approach path. Usually they are on the approach path when they get above CA-87/I-280.

Way to over react. But if you'd like me to be a jerk...

Question: if you were so interested, why did you drive away instead of pulling over to see what happened next?

I'm simply curious.

Yeah, I keep looking back at this to see what other people think what happened, such as the other thread two days ago about the Jet2 aborted landing, but Ikramerica does seem like he is being an ass about this,

what if FLY2LIM was busy, or had something else to do, and what would pulling over do any help? The 737 is already gone, what would you do, ask it why it did that?

Dont mean to be attacking you, Ikramerica but I find this a little silly to be up in a puff about it.

Yeah same thing happend to me on a CRJ to SLC from OAK. Made me kind of courious why a CRJ had to pull back up for a go around but then again there was snow all over the run way. So maybe not enough cleard away for landing.

Is it really that common? I dont think I have seen it that much. Was it almost ready to touch down or was it way over head with a good amount of alititude?

Thanks for posting this by the way. I notice smaller things like this every now and then at SFO and OAK but dont bother putting it on here because people like Ikramerica let there egos get in the way.

Well it's not too common for an airliner to do it, I would only guess it happens at SNA a handful of times a year so feel go that you saw something that doesnt happen for an airliner but in general aviation it happens on a lot, but that is because it doesnt cost us thousands of dollars to go around like it does for the bigger birds.

It's more common than a lot of people on this website realize. At some airports, go-arounds happen almost daily.

Unfortunately, the pilots of that flight would most likely be the only ones that could tell you why they went around. On a typical go-around, all that is reported to the tower is the fact that they are going around. Unless it was an event covered on the news, chances are no one around here would even be aware the plane went around unless they were on the flight or saw it as well. Ikramerica was right about such a thing being newsworthy (although he could have said so differently). They aren't and therefor, you probably wont find the true answer aside from educated guess based on the circumstances you describe.

Yeah, bummer you didn't have a scanner with you... Oh and I got an update on the price of a go around from the Tech, Ops forums and it said a 747 would cost $3,750 US and that is for a 30min pattern.
