Varig Today - June 26

Tue Jun 27, 2006 3:10 am

Hi A.Net friends,

I just come back from a long World Cup & Europe trip (Germany, UK, Portugal, Italy and France) and took some fresh news on Varig situation.

1) Fleet
- 2 Boeing 777-200 (PP-VRI and VRJ)
- 3 MD-11 (PP-VTI, PP-VTK and PP-VTP)
- 1 767-300ER (PP-VOJ)
- 9 737-300 (PP-VQN,VNZ,VOZ,SSQ,VON,VOY,VPY,VTA,VPC
- 3 737-400 (PP-VTL,VTM,VTN)
- 1 737-500 (PT-MNH)

2) Routes

Daily International flights:
GIG-FRA / GRU-FRA / GIG-GRU-LHR-CPH / GIG-EZE / GRU-EZE (3x daily, one thru POA)
GIG-GRU-VVI-LIM

International 6x weekly
GIG-GRU-CCS / GRU-MIA-GIG / GRU-SCL-GRU

International 2x weekly
GRU-JFK-GRU

Domestic Destinations
Rio de Janeiro (SDU, GIG) Sao Paulo (CGH, GRU), CWB, POA, FLN, IGU, SSA, REC, FEN, MAO, BEL, BSB

FLN, IGU, FEN, BEL see less than 3 flights per day
BSB runs only 1x GIG, 1x MAO, 2x CGH and 1x GRU
CNF, VIX, NAT, MCZ, AJU, droped.

EZE with premium service only one flight per day from GRU (using MD11)

MIA and JFK receive one of the EuroAtlantic B763.

3) Lessors

Seems that ILFC will put PP-VRB in conditions to fly. PP-VRA (both GE90 powered 777-200ER) is seized at GIG, same to PP-VRC.
Two 738 (PP-VSA and VSB), the two 737-700 (SAF and SAG) as well as the 4 757-200 (VTS, VTT, VTR and VTQ) are all on ground (they have conditions to fly) due to judge decision.

4) Cash

Varig does not have cash on hand

5) Fuel

BR Distribuidora (Petrobras Group) will furnish QAV (fuel) till June 27

6) VELOG

The only (and probably last) chance for Varig. The judge will decide today if it's acceptable the bid from Velog in order to buy RG. In case of a positive decision, VELOG will disburse US$ 20 mm in order RG can fly up to a week before legal procedures take place for a new auction where they will buy Varig legally.

7) Domestic TICKETS

No one is loosing money or their tickets. Tam, Gol and Webjet are accepting RG Tickets, limited to their free seats.

If any of you have any doubt, i will try to obtain the desired information.

With the 20 milion cash injection by Varig Log, maybe RG will be able to put some more planes in the air rigth? maybe some B733. What about their B732? 3 or 4 years agor they put on operation 5 of this (wich they own, and stay at ground on POA) to suplly their lack of planes. Do you know something about it?

The one question that really remains is can RG be salvaged? Is there any way that this airline can really be turned around?

Or wouldn't it, perhaps, be better to simply shut the whole thing down?

I admit that my personal experience might be playing into this, because after my own experience with RG, I'd have to be paid money to fly on them again (and it'd have to be a lot of money)... but even trying to see this from a neutral viewpoint: shouldn't they, just like PA, EA, SN and SR, take their place in the hall of fame of "airlines that used to be prestigious"?

NO! RG in the 90s was one of world's most prestigious airlines, and I really think and hope it can become it again! It's only a metter of reestructuration (a big and well coordenated one). One think, even broke, RG still have: It's name. When RG ables to provide a good service again, than it would be easy to conciliate the service to the name, and "restart" for a new and glorious "life".

I guess that's - as usual - the biggest problem: will the employees accept what has to be done? Or will they, as in the case of other airlines, try to hang on to what used to be, in the process running their airline into the ground?

If some of the European employees of RG are any indication, I'd say that their chances are less than that of the proverbial snowball in hell - an airline who's employees in pricing don't even know what IATA's tariff conference area 1 is... not just that they didn't know which area it covers (which is bad enough), but they hadn't even heard the term before...

I honestly don't wish a bankrupcy on anyone, but in the case of RG, I just can not imagine how it can be avoided, unless someone new comes on board and radically changes everything about this airline.

What the employees does not understand is that: With no reestructuration the company will declare insolvent and EVERY employee will lose his job, with the reestructuration, obviously there will be resignations, i think something like 5.300 people, a big part won't lose their jobs.
So now, is a metter of, everybody accepts de reestructuration for some of them hold the jobs, or they continue to act like this, and soon averybody will be dismissed whem RG colapses.

Concerning to their 732 fleet, some has been sold, some are on ground at POA facility. The reason they cannot put these birds back is that they will need flight deck staff with 732 valid certification, something that only TAF (from FOR) and RICO probably have. But do you imagine someone from other airline where they receive salaries, changing to fly for Varig ? I doubt.
The money will be used to pay lessors in order to release the fleet nowadays on ground (4 752, 2 738, 2 772, 5 M11, 2 73G) and to pay fuel and daily charges like handling.

That's why a BIGGG reestructuration needs to take place. And the employees need to help on that.

Also, what a/c are they operation on GRU/MIA route?

Yes, that's a very big risky thing to do. People are mainly waisting their miles.

They are operating the 763 PP-VOJ, the "Euro Atlantic" onde. That was before used in Charter Flights.

Hi Tony, sales are restricted to pax at the airport without other options and with the plane at the gate, as well as FF tickets.

Code-share on Alitalia MXP-GRU route has been dropped today by AZ and no more tickets issued by Varig after June 21st will be accepted.

Air France/KLM announce today they will not accept more pax from RG.

GRU-MIA-GIG is runing with 767-300ER from EuroAtlantic.

International 2x weekly
GRU-JFK-GRU

They had previously said that JFK and LAX were going to be ended and only 1x daily to MIA would remain in the US. Has that changed? Are they really going to do JFK twice a week?

We were advised today by APAVT (Port. Travel and Tourism Assoc.) that RG had been removed from IATA's clearing house system, but whilst they were still in BSP, we were recommended not to book RG as their tickets may soon be worthless and not honoured by other carriers.

Yes, it has been changed. They have a huge base of customers and ticket sold for their JFK service. This is why they change and include a 2x weekly service using EuroAtlantic aircraft. This will allow all pax to travel even with a 2 days delay.

When will this RG lovers wake up and face that the company is literally dead!

It's name and image have been ruined!!!! If you ask anyone in the Brazilian streets whether they would buy a RG ticket again, I'm pretty sure the most of them would refuse! The airline is broke!!! There is nothing to it!!! It's only a matter of time! Although I gotta admit that Brazilan press has been contributing for RG's demise!!!!

My partner is flying from Toronto to Santiago via Sao Paulo this evening. They seemed to have changed all the passengers originally booked on the Varig flight from Sao Paulo to Santiago to a LAN Chile flight... When I talked to the women at AC Check In she told me that nobody really knows what the hell is going on... They're just waiting along with the rest of us.

VarigLog will disburse the money on a daily basis to Varig until the auction. Today VarigLog deposited R$8M (approx USD3,5M). If VarigLog does not buy Varig in the auction the buyer will have to repay VarigLog's loan with a premium of 10%.

The good news for the auction is that NV Participações and its sponsor TGV (Varig's employees) cannot take part and bid in the auction, because of the default in their offer.

Today the judge, Varig and VarigLog agreed to postpone the decision about VarigLog's offer to Wednesday afternoon, so VarigLog and Varig may develop the offer and the business plan and clarify some doubts the judge and Varig's judicial administrator (Deloitte) had about the offer and the plan.

As of today, all odds in Court House were for the approval of VarigLog's offer and plan, but it is necessary to have VarigLog clarifying the judge's doubts and also to have a new auction to sell the company

Thanks for the update. I saw my last (I hope by God that it will not be my last seen) Varig aircraft on CPH airport 13th of April this year. A MD-11, and It looked so shiny. If they don't make It I hope that they will be born again, and that I will see the same MD-11 that I saw before, again. Maybe at ARN instead of CPH?  Smile

Varig needs Lufthansa to buy it. Have Lufthansa run it just like how Lufthansa runs swiss. Then the airline will be strict no fun but on time and profitable  Wink

You're right. PP-VTC and PP-VTE. One of them is used during the day on GIG-BSB-MAO service, one is used on US routes during all the day.

I flew from MIA to GIG on RG on June 9th. At that flight they used MD11 but when returned it was the VOJ (767/300 star Alliance) on the 14th.
Actually on this flight I ended up to fly with them to be able to use a voucher issued a month earlier when all passangers got stranded 4 hours late at GRU. At that flight I had to buy a new connection ticket with GOL from CGH so that I could continue my trip to CNF. Varig did absolutely nothing for the passangers. At that returnflight we then had to wait at GRU 4 hours so that Varig could get a plane to us and when it finally arrived it was a 767 painted with Atlantis charter. I could not determine the registration. I feel bad for the emplyees who now will have to struggle because of all the years of mismanagement. I also believe that the competition from Varig is needed on the US/Brasil routes. During the last couple of years TAM has increased their prices significantly and it has become almost impossible to use the miles for flights. I probably as we speak have miles for about 5 roundtrips.

Though nobody is buying Varig tickets now, I believe the situation might change if somebody with money bought the airline.

If VarigLog actually buy them, I believe that the money will start to flow again, lessors would have their nerves calmed down a little bit, cancellations would be less and the press would start to say this. With that, passengers would again look for Varig as a carrier.

Just my thoughts!

Just My opinion but JL must be really making a profit after RG pulled its NRT-LAX-GRU sector.

JL says they are going to upgrade to the planes with the shell-flat seats and its JL's monopoly, well faces competition from AC and other US airlines

Flights to FRA seems to be the only where people keep buying tickets due to the fact that the demand keeps strong and the high number of brazilians at Germany keep the flights from both GIG and GRU with high loads on F, C and Y.
FRA service is kept, even some days with a single flight FRA-GIG-GRU.

Absolutely! Now JL is the only airline that has BRAZIL/ASIA flights! Varig has code-share with LH in FRA/PEK and there is always the option of flying AF till Paris and get another AF flight till Asia, or to DL, UA, CO or AA and in the USA get a flight to ASIA.
Another option is to fly GRU/JNB/ASIA by SAA!

What is VRB's status?

Need an engine at GIG CEMAN facility. Rumors that ILFC will fix it.

They're still asking VarigLog for more details on their proposal (the judge that is).

More info:

- They load a new timetable into the system:
a) No GRU-FRA service, pax need to run a GRU-GIG flight and from GIG the GIG-FRA non stop (the only one non-stop transatlantic from July 2 to July 9)
b) No Miami or New York service
c) EZE reduced to GRU-POA-EZE and GIG-EZE services
d) No London (!), No Madrid, No Milan, No Paris, No Santiago
e) CCS will receive GIG-GRU-MAO-CCS-GIG-GRU service with 734
f) GIG-GRU-SCL-GIG with 734 too
g) Domestic services reduced to GIG-BSB-MAO-BSB-GIG, GIG-SSA-GIG, IGU-GRU-GIG-BEL-GIG-GRU-IGU, POA-GIG-REC-FEN-REC-GIG-POA, GRU-MAO-GRU, CGH-BSB-CGH-CWB-CGH-POA-CGH and shuttle service SDU-CGH.

And the judge extended the validity of the protection against lessors, but stated that Varig has 10 days to return any aircraft requested by lessors.

Velog is under negotiations with Boeing, ILFC and Bristol to keep the necessary planes (Velog will need only 30 planes and 3,000 employees) on RG fleet, seems that 25 to 30 planes will be returned to lessors.

Thanks FMAL & Lipe!

So, the acquisition by Velog is likely to occur? How many employees does RG have now? I guess a lot more than 3,000?

What needs to be seen is what exactly are Velog's intentions with Varig.

Is it mearly to maintain their cargo services on Varig's passenger planes, or do they wish to rebuild Varig, gradually, into the once mighty brand it used to be?

Felipe, i believe their first intention is to keep their cargo network needs as their fleet is very limited. If they could run a profitable operation, so they could improve RG operations in the future.

I have the PP-VTH stored at Venice (VCE) as N285UP.

But what's about the PP-VQK.

It's from Boeing and nowadays stored at GIG with more 3 M11: PP-VQG/VQH/VQJ
Velog is under negotiations to use such aircrafts as soon as the new auction take place and they took control of Varig operations.

Yesterday they made a new loan (the 4th) to keep Varig runing.

According to one of the above posts, MIA service has been halted. I've heard that AA's 777s are nice, though.

Varig intend to return the service to MIA and JFK on July 9. I believe if Varig is not running MIA route, he will fly JJ.
