Article: Is Airbus' John Leahy On The Hot Seat?

Wed Jun 28, 2006 2:38 am

According to the following article, Airbus' chief salesman, the famous John Leahy, may face the music regarding the recent A380 controversy:

I have the same personal feelings regarding Leahy as I do regarding Forgeard.

All the article mentions is that he is "in the spotlight". Doesn't say his job is on the line. However, I suspect that when he visits QF, EK, or SQ the next time, the B.S. detectors of those airlines will be finely calibrated!  Wink

Well, spotlights can be pretty hot.  Wink This is the first mention I've read about Leahy in connection with his A380 representations. I hope that they focus on precisely what this gentleman has done, if any, to contribute to this mess.

If Leahy receives an e-mail that asks him to report to the Board regarding his efforts and why there is an allegation he might have "oversold" the A380, particularly in light of finalization issues, I would imagine that he would feel a little something in the pit of his stomach.

Admittedly, I do have a vivid imagination.  Wink

Ok so John Leahy, in his zeal to seal the deal (Catchy, isn't it?) promised customers customized electrical layout after the aircraft was made firm. Sounds like another head for the chopping block.

It's good thing that Boeing is limiting customer customizations on the 787 or else they would be over budget and behind schedule too. Bad move on the part of John Leahy! If true!

He always was pushing for a deal at any cost - now they are paying a price.

More then any other person John Leahy made Airbus what it is today. He was the person with the vision to win the market from Boeing, and went out and made the sales.

Airbus get's rid of Leahy at their own risk.

Quite true but if he overstepped his bounds which can help contribute to $2.5bn in losses then they might go ahead and do it. Besides what can be more appealing to the French than to blame an American for the problems and then give him the heave ho. It'll certainly go over well with the French polis as well as the public.

Also, he probably doesn't have a political patron, and thus his position is vulnerable.

I thought John Leahy was Australian? Is he an American? Not that it matters. There are plenty of Americans, as well as people of any other nationality, in positions such as his within the company who deserve scrutiny when such things as what occurred to Airbus come to light. Speaking generally and in my humble opinion, of course.
