Are There Taxis At LAS?

Wed Jun 28, 2006 8:10 am

Hey everyone. I'm flying to Vegas for the first time (usually drive from Socal) and was talkin to a co-worker who said that taxies cannot pick up at LAS, only drop off and that I would be forced to take a Limo or bus to the strip. Any truth in that?

Fly out Sunday 7/2 and come home Wed. 7/5. Will try to do a trip report as well.

A complete myth.

You cannot just hire any taxi, though - only licensed airport taxis can pick up fares from the airport. However, any taxi can take you TO the airport.

Totally false. I've gotten a taxi from McCarran many times. Although, sometimes the lines are long....

There's a reason the terminal dropoff area has 5 lanes each way.

From the LAS website

BEGIN QUOTE

Taxicabs are available outside on the east side of baggage claim, outside door exits 1-5. Airport personnel are available on the taxi curb to assist passengers.

Please note:
Taxis will not accept credit card payments. There is a $1.20 charge on all fares originating at the airport. The maximum number of passengers allowed in any taxi is five (5), including infants and children.

END QUOTE

By the way, if your taxi takes you south (through the tunnel) to a strip hotel, be sure to write down the cab number and company, and call the Las Vegas Taxi and Limousine Commission because your cabbie just took a much longer route than he needed to.

might be a longer route mileage wise, but sometimes a lot quicker because of traffic.

Yeah, a huge amount of taxi's drop and pick people off at LAS, so that's a total myth. What time are you flying in? Be prepared for a long wait if you are arriving at 9-11pm.

I can't imagine how Vegas would make any money at all if they were dependent on tourists renting cars or walking...

My advice... go for a cab. The "shuttle", though about half the price takes more than four times as long, in my experience.

Last time I was there, lots of cabs and long lines, but well organized so not really a long wait.
Check your hotel out on their website. Some hotels have a check-in area at the baggage claim. Last time I checked in our rooms while my aunt waited for the bags. We got to our hotel - the Flamingo - and went straight to our rooms, bypassing the huge lines. I beleive the Flamingo, Paris and a couple other hotels are affiliated, those you could check in for by baggage claim also.
Check it out, hope it works for you!
cheers,

They can pick up at LAS. The only place in Las vegas they are not allowed to pick up is on The Strip part of Las Vegas Blvd. You will need to go to a hotel/casino to get a cab on the strip.

I once got stuck on Las Vegas Blvd at 5:00 PM in traffic and it took me a half hour to go one block. If I got in a cab at LAS during evening rush hour, I might ask the cab to go the tunnel route depending on my destination.

Furthermore if you are travelling with someone else, the shuttles charge per person, while cabs charge per mile plus certain surcharges. With 2 or more people, the cabs are usually the same price or cheaper and far more convenient.

Yes; quite possibly the longest line you will ever stand in during your entire life.
In my experience, if you land on a Friday evening/night plan on being in the line for over an hour (I was).

Is that a big departure bank for HP/US and WN or something?

I can't vouch for WN's sked, but I can tell ya that HP's heaviest bank during the daytime is around 1100. Flights from the coast get in between 1000 and 1030, west coast arrivals coming in between 1045 and 1100, and a large bank of departures between 1125 and 1210. The cab traffic on HP inbounds probably will have dissapated by 1230, due to the fact that we only have about 8 arrivals between 1130 and 1430.

Correction....it is not completely a myth. Taxi's are not allowed to pick up at the airport, I believe, 2 days a week. So as to give all taxi's the opportunity to work the airport. They can deliver, but not pickup.

And to that who responded the south tunnel is the long way comment that is not completely true. During big conventions it is much quicker and more efficient to go the freeway route south through the tunnel.

You can get a taxi in LAS. Outside of baggage claim. You can also rent a limo pretty cheap too. You can get a limo as cheap as $7-$10 per person. But, you might have to ride the limo with others.

Ever car has 2 days of the week off. Some taxis have Mon/Tues some maybe Wed/Sat etc. etc. etc. It's random per car but generally organized to give everyone a equal shot at the airport.

Depends on what time you get in I guess. From the time I got off of the plane (got in around 8pm) and was in my room at the I.P. was by 9:15. The taxi rank moved quite fast, I was in line maybe 15 minutes (line was moving so fast I had troubled trying to call someone as I keep trying to dial, walk and pull my bag at the same time).

But it's a longer way, and longer journey=higher cab fare, and is a practice that is discouraged by the taxi and limo commission. I got "tunnelled" my last trip to Vegas and had I not been so tired, I probably would have got the number and reported the guy (He didn't even drop me off at the porte coche, as he took a back way into the I.P.).
