I Am About To Fly The Superconstellation But.....

Wed Jun 28, 2006 5:55 pm

I'm about to go to central Siwtzerland to go join the Super constellation for a flight above the Alps from Buochs(close to Lucerne) to Geneva. However the problem is they announce a very stromy afternoon and still don't know whether I should go on that plane or not. So far the flight hasn't been postponed but I'm very skeptical about going on board a super connie with this type of weather. I hope it should be fine and that I'll be back safe to wrtie a trip report

Regards

haha, trust me on this: They won't allow the flight to depart if there are any issues which will cause problems in-flight. I think with such an old aircraft, they would take extra precautions.

Go ahead, enjoy your flight and have fun!

Thanks
Mike

Actually, the 1049 has survived a lot of bad weather in the past, so why should it be different in Switzerland? It might actually be more fun, although you probably won't get much of a view.

There are a couple of things you should remember

1] The crew like living

2] The Connies used to be used as hurricane chasers so they are not as
fragile as they look.

You could cancel this trip and get knocked over by a bus. Go enjoy yourself

Hi,

It's quite simple:

- First, you have to be a SCFA member: http://www.superconstellation.org/
- Next, on the flight programm, you select a flight, pay a fee.

It's that simple. It's also a fantastic project, and every aviation fan is more than welcome to sign up with the project!

Please also note that you have to be a member from at least 30 days before the flight, for insurrance purpose.

Hope you will join,

Raphael

Put it this way - if you don't take the trip, you'll regret it for the rest of your life - and if I could, I'd reach through the modem lines and strangle you! Big grin

Have a safe flight. May your next one be on a flying saucer Big grin

They cancel the flights if the weather is just remotedly doubtable. My first flight for which I came to Basel last august was cancelled. The weather conditions were above minima for a flight without passengers, but the crew decided not to go as the clouds and turbulence wouldn't appeal to most passengers. So it's more likely the flight is cancelled while conditions are safe enough then that the flight will go while it's not 100% safe.

I'd be more concerned with poor viewing conditions than with the storm itself but I'd rather fly a Connie in bad weather than not at all.  Smile

You have NOT to feel jealous. As said on reply #7, you are more than welcome to join the porject if you could afford it. It's not very expensive, and I'm sure that you will be able to secure a flight between UK and Basel or ZRH.

Plus, it will be my pleasure to meet another a.net meeting during the SCFA annual meeting. And we also maybe share a flight!

I really have to second that. I actually do feel very lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy a such magical flight considering my age.

I've never even seen a Connie. I'd be very happy if I could just see one on final to DCA.

I'd fly on it in a minute, storms or not. If the crew thought it was safe it would be good enough for me.

What a fantastic opportunity. I hope you enjoy every second of it -- I know I would.

I agree with Contrails. A super connie over DCA would be perfect. Good luck. BTW, my 100th post. Not to shabby for a green horn.

There is one parked at IAD... sadly its in poor condition. Ultimately it will become part of the Udvar-Hazy center if money permits.

With liability insurance issues and a beautiful restored, but old airframe, I doubt they are going to fly the Connie in weather conditions that wouldn't be favorable. But even if they do, go for the finest ride of your life! A flight in a 1049 is something to savor! And if you do go down in flames, you did it in style!

Yes, I took a picture of it in September of 2004. It was in a mothballed state.

Hi folks

My trop yesterday was just AMAZING. Finally the Gods of Weather were with us. The weather was very great. Unfortunately we didn't fly over the alps because it was starting to get stromy but elsewhere the weather was clear. We flew over Lake Lucerne(Vierwaldstättersee) wher we had an aircraft next to us (did you mean that lake LX Lucien...if not perhaps you flew next to the connie in the morning when it did some test flight). You'll be able to read my Trip report as soon as I have finished it (by tomorrow hopefully).

The flight cost me 280 Swiss Francs and was largely worth it!

Its very worthwhile and the Superconnie always such an amazing aircraft.

Cheers
