Delta In TLV

Wed Jun 28, 2006 7:11 pm

Hi,

Yesterday (06/27/06) at 6.00PM I saw a DELTA a/c landing at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport.
I think the A/C was a B764.

I just want to check if anyone of you knows how it came to here as they never fly to Israel, they usually codeshare with LY, but never come to here.

I appreciate any further information.

Regards,

The reason you saw a Delta A/c at TLV is because they recently began services to Israel!

DL now fly 7x weekly to TLV from ATL using the Boeing 777-200ER  Smile

Flights arrive at 17:25 in TLV; and depart at 23:40 back to ATL  Smile

I'm surprised you have heard nothing of this service. They have been advertising the daylights out of it over here in the States since last year before they even had the approval to fly the route. Given that they want full loads both ways i would think they would advertise it in Israel also.

Yes, exactly, and I heard that DL is very successful on this route

So how are they doing, anyway? What are the loads?

IIRC, They started flying ATL-TLV on March 30. Do they consider the route a success? Is it nearly as successful as CO's EWR-TLV?

On top of that DL should really upgrade their office in TLV. The Allenby st. location really does not suit a top notch airline like DL.

Are ATL connections good or is it long waiting?

Depends on the destinations. For most domestic destinations, and a good number of international destinations, connections are pretty much ideal. Only exceptions are most flights to South America, which can require layovers of around 12 hours both ways, and of course the Europe routes, though they are obviously of no interest (unless you are on a desperate hunt for miles  Wink ).

It arrives just before 6 in the morning. At that time you would be able to clear Immigration and Customs pretty quickly and make the early morning flights from about 7:30-8:00 onwards.

Yes, according to senior DL execs, ATL-TLV has been profitable pretty much from the start.

Outside of inaugural press releases, given the fact that they have high load factors, and are doing well on the route, DL does not need to, nor do they have the $$$$ to spend on advertising.

Most North American airlines rely heavily on internet bookings, and as such, costly and fancy ticket offices are a thing of the past. Many have closed their CSO's in favour of airport facilities.

Considering LY is the "hometown" airline, their ticket office on Ben Yehuda is nothing special.

I do agree with you on the financial issue, but I don't know if you had a chance to see DL's office in TLV. I am not talking about upgrading to fancy, I'm talking about upgrading to presentable  Smile.

Regarding LY - they will be moving to T1 at TLV, vacating the Ben Yehuda building.

Seems to be the worldwide trend, given financial pressures experienced by most airlines. Again, given the volume of internet transactions, increasingly street front/major ticket offices are becoming a thing of the past.

And you're right. DL's CSO is a dump.

Remember that DL and LY are partners and LY's code is on DL's ATL flights. By default, DL gets advertising in Israel from LY for its flights.

Would the codeshare arrangement continue if DL resumes flights on the JFK-TLV route, as is currently rumored? If DL and LY remain codeshare partners, other airlines probably would argue that this alliance almost has a monopoly on the JFK-TLV route, and it controls too much of the market for flights between Israel and airports in the NYC area.

I tried to book Delta TLV-ATL-TLV and was todl by their website they only accept bookings as ATL-TLV-ATL... that could be the reason for the smaller marketing campaign in Israel.

delta.com probably does not accept Israeli originating bookings.

There are a number of markets which DL and a partner both serve. There is no reason to think that DL service from JFK to TLV would cause El Al to pull the plug on its relationship w/ DL.

I don't see a problem with that, since you also have CO in the market with 2 daily 777 flights, plus supposedly a third flight soon, plus Israir, though I don't know much about their frequency or plane type. But there definitely is healthy competition. Also, if market domination was a problem, e.g DL and AZ or DL and AF would not be allowed to codeshare on each others flights to FCO/MXP and CDG, respectively.
