Delays Galore At JFK Today 6/28

Thu Jun 29, 2006 5:41 am

It seems that planes have been pushing back on-time but aren't departing until well over an hour past their scheduled times. What's going on? The weather here on Long Island is just fine...pretty humid but no thunderstorms in the immediate area.

I guess there will be ground delays at JFK/EWR/LGA everyday from now til September. Great.

1 hour past? We should all be so lucky. I flew out of JFK on Monday 6/26 and we took off at 9:45pm after pushing off the gate at 7:21pm. There was no weather (seemingly) in the area...just a whole lot of airplanes in front of us. Issue was compounded when ATC decided to switch takeoff runways from 13R to 22R right in the middle of the evening rush hour.

The thing with JFK is there is always only one runway for arrivals and one for takeoffs in use at the same time. So during the evening rush hour, one is often #40 for takeoff or something similar when one joins the queue.

Dont' feel so bad. Back in '86 we pushed back from the Wolrdport on a 74 only to be advised were were #96 in line that night for 31L. Instead of turning left on the outer, we ended up going right on the inner and circled the entire airport before getting to the end of the runway. And to think that I spent 21 years at that place.

Yes, I remember very well sitting on Clipper 2 to LHR or Clipper 72 to FRA and waiting for an interminably long time for takeoff....and to think, back then, Pan Am hardly padded its schedule (PA 2 JFK-LHR STD1900 STA 0640+) unlike what DL has done this summer (e.g., JFK-CDG this summer has a published flight time of 7:55 compared to 7:30 previously and an actual of usually 6:20 - 6:45)

That's the truth. The times stayed the same all year round and were right on the actual block time. The trouble at that time is that our competitors had the exact same times in their schedules and no-one wanted to be the first to blink and give in. I spent many hours arguing for schedule changes with the Pan Am bldg before I transferred to MIA, but didn't win a one.

I live by JFk and the weather can't be better than that, usually in the summer the holding time is longer because more aircrafts are leaving at the same time, the last time i flew internationally from JFK was last July and we were on the ground almost 1 hour after the push back ( which was on time , usually pilots make up the time during the flight)

It's weird...they are using 13L quite a bit for departures today on top of 13R. I just want this stupid stationary front to get the heck out of here already...its driving me up the wall.

It's bad today, a lot of lineups. Right now as of last time I checked ATC they have something like 32 in line.

How did this work? Did all of the aircraft lined up for 13R taxi in unison? Or were some at the end allowed to jump the line?

Ouch!!! Was this weather related or just rush hour traffic?

They do that quite often.

Oh by the way, if your a B6 flyer and your leaving from 13R, the taxi is what is killing every B6 plane for delays.

Here's another problem with delays, two aircraft have problems and ruin the sequence, an AA 752 and a B6 322. The worst part is that both breakdowns happen in sequence.

Not true! If that were the case it would make JFK spotting so easy!

I noticed last night the tail winds across the Atlantic were very strong. Most transatlantics took off 45-60 late but most landed on time. IF these flights would have left on time, many would have landed 6-90 minutes early. AZ 605 for example left an hour late and go in pretty much on time. If it would have took off on schedule, the flight would have got in 90 minutes early!!! Are flights ever held on purpose due to scheduling issues like this?

They used to hold EKs early morning flights at SIN due to the very strong tailwinds enroute. This was in the mid to late 90s.

Going home to DUB I always fly EI from JFK. In my ignorance I used to take the earliest (6.20) flight, but having spent too many hours waiting on the tarmac I now get the later flight and spend the extra time lesiurely watching the planes go by. Having travelled back and forth for the last 15 years I've noticed a marked decline in the standard of service on EI, but that has been more than offset by the reduction in the fare. Even discounting inflation, in pure total $ terms its probably cheaper to fly now than it was 15 years ago. Service and price are not the only items to have reversed. In the 747-100 days EI had the oldest fleet with the youngest air hostesses, now they have a younger fleet but the oldest hostesses.
