JetBlue, Continental Top J.D. Power Airline Survey
By Ann Keeton
Dow Jones
CHICAGO (June 29) - U.S. air travelers ranked JetBlue Airways Corp. as their favorite low-cost airline and Continental Airlines Inc. as the best of the traditional network airlines, according to a study from J.D. Power & Associates released Thursday.

Many financially strapped U.S. airlines continue to cut costs, but that doesn't mean they're slacking on good service for customers, Linda Hirneise, executive director of the travel practice at J.D. Power, said in a prepared statement.

"Airlines that have high customer satisfaction have two things in common: They have processes in place to ensure a consistent, positive travel experience, and they have the right people working for them, who make the flying experience a pleasurable one for their passengers."

In partnership with Aviation Week Magazine, the research company polled nearly 10,000 airline passengers who flew between January and May of 2006.

"JetBlue is true to its model," Hirneise said, delivering on a promise to give passengers "a comfortable seat with a television monitor, peanuts, and service with a smile."

Southwest Airlines Co. ranked second in customers' satisfaction with low-cost airlines.

Passengers said Continental excels in the check-in, in-flight service, and cost and fees factors. The Houston airline ranked particularly high among business travelers, the survey found.

Delta Air Lines Inc. was close behind Continental, according to passengers polled, with American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp., coming in third.

Las Vegas McCarran Is Favorite Airport

The survey also asked passengers to rank U.S. airports. Among the largest airports, McCarran International in Las Vegas came in first, followed by New York's John F. Kennedy International and Philadelphia International, which tied for second place.

Dallas/Fort Worth International ranked third of 17 major airports included in the survey.

New York's LaGuardia International ranked first among medium-sized airports, followed by Chicago Midway International and Baltimore Washington International.

Dallas Love Field tied for first among small U.S. airports, ranked equally with Houston Hobby International. Orange County John Wayne ranked second behind the Texas airports.

McCarran as favorite airport!?!?!?! WTF?

Well, I see where PHL and BWI ranked; I wonder how PIT ranked in medium-sized airports. I can't imagine it being anywhere near the bottom or not ranked at all. That to me would be judging the airport rather harshly...

Especially PHL. I see more complaints from people traveling through PHL than I do compliments. I never see any complaints from people traveling through PIT though (not to seem biased either!!) There are nicer airports than PIT, but PHL isn't one of them...

Most likely the questions asked about the airports were emotionally charged, like "What airport do you like because of amenities served?" and.. "What airport do you like because of take-off and landing approaches?" Remember also these people were asked this at a random basis and some are going to be "hommies" about it, I am just shocked LGA came in first because so many people I speak to hate the airport with a dire passion.

As soon as I saw this, I completely threw this garbage out the window. Why in the name of God would they put HOU tied atop the "small" airports in the US, especially when its tied with DAL. HOU is the scum of the earth when it comes to airports. Small, cramped, dark, not to mention the lack of things to do. I'd much rather fly through somewhere far more out of the way than transit through HOU.

When was the last time you were there? You consider the new central concourse 'small, cramped, dark'?

Granted its been a while, so perhaps my assessment is no longer valid. I suppose I should've inquired into any new renovations that have taken place in say the last....5 years or so.

Argument withdrawn. I just hope they didn't vote for it before the new concourse opened.  Wink

hahah--I agree with you, the baggage claim, concourse A and C still are pretty much the same--new vendors and concessions though and lighting has been improved. Concourse B was torn down though and replaced with a new central concourse that is predominately glass. Check out some pics

Just goes to show that the most valued opinions do not come from internet forums. PHL has actually rated near the top of several recent surveys. JD Powers provides the following description of their High Rating mark:
"High ratings for a particular product/service/company do not necessarily mean that every customer will have a positive experience. It simply indicates that, on average, consumer perceptions of the product/service/company indicate that it stands out when compared with competitive products/services/companies."

Here are the JDP Points for MEDIUM size airports:

Medium Size Airports:
Name = Total Points
LGA = 24 = Top
MDW = 23
BWI = 21
TPA = 20
CLE = 19
FLL = 19
PIT = 19
DCA = 18
SAN = 18
SLC = 18
MEM = 18
STL = 18
SMF = 18
SJC = 17
IAD = 16
BOS = 16
YYZ = 16
SEA = 16
CLT = 15
HNL = 14
OAK = 14
CVG = 14
YVR = 12
PDX = 12
YYC = 10

A note. LJP does not compare Large Airports with Medium Airports, just Large with Large and Med with Med, (and Small with Small), which is probably the best statistical method.

Okay, so among mid-sized airports, it looks like PIT is tied for 5th. I guess I can live with that. If it were to rank down where IAD is at or lower, I'd have hell to raise and a bone to pick with JDP...

It's hard to pat someone on the back for their statistical method when they list an airport finishing "third" with three ahead of it and another in "second" with two ahead of it.

"In other news, MIA was rated the second-best airport in Florida, finishing behind an 11-way tie for first of FLL, TPA, MCO, DAB, PNS, EYW, RSW, JAX, PFN, APF, and SRQ."

Thats the truth! Your right, there are nicer airports than PIT, but I can't think of any in the US??? Pittsburgh is so clean for one!

Not bad at all . . . . it tied with CLE and FLL . . . both decent airports IMO. PIT beats them easily I think, but a tie is sufficient.

LGA, DCA, PIT and YYZ all medium sized airports? YYZ? HOW?

LGA, cramped, congested, old LGA five places above PIT? Who were the customers that did this survey? DCA is also better than LGA, I mean they both are small airports but LGA really does suck. DCA at least has nice arquitecture going for it.

I have to agree with you, after my travel experiences yesterday, PIT is def. in a class of its own! I have been through quite a few airports, but after connecting through PHL yesterday, that airport is so embarrassing! It was worse than I thought it would be...
