LAX Airport

Fri Jun 30, 2006 10:40 am

Quick question... What is the name of the restaurant outside the terminals in the middle of the airport? It's the building that lights up at night and kind of the signature of LAX airport. Looks kinda like a dome. Please don't flame me to much.

Thanks,

MD90fan is correct. The Encounter...Parking is insane, as is hte price for food. There used to be an observation deck up there, but not anymore. You can get some pretty ok views from a window seat in the place, but nothing photoworthy.

According to Wikipedia, LAX" target=_blank>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAX "The architecture shown in The Jetsons was based on the LAX Theme Building's exterior, then the Theme Building's interior was redesigned to have a "Jetsons" feel."

What is the price range of the menu, i.e.; what is the cost of typical sitting per person? Also, looking the few pictures of the food that they have on the website, what are the portions like?

There is very convenient $6 valet parking at the bottom of the Theme Building. Otherwise if you rather self park you can at any of the terminal lots, however I doubt you'll get out for less then $10.

You can manage lunch for the $20 range and a decent dinner for the $30 range. Off course the employee discount helps in my case  Wink

Overall I would say while the food is not something I would go out of my way to get, the location is pretty neat. I've been there quite often with friends waiting to catch flights particularly in the evenings. Good place to hang out for drinks and a bite.

How easy is it to get to the terminals from the resturant? I've never been to LAX, but I'm going to visit two friends in September there..

Pretty easy, all you need to do if you are on the southside of the airport (4 5 6 and 7) is walk up or down to terminal 6 and it is just right across the street. On the north side (1 2 3), walk up to terminal 1 and it is just right across the street. Or from anywhere, you can just look at the giant structure and walk right towards it and you should get there fine, no fences or anything.

The encounter is very interesting. It is a shame that the observation deck is closed, that was my favorite part about LAX. Don't be fooled by the weird ride up in the elevator, it will be a little fancier than you would think. It would be really nice if it rotated like the CN Tower!!!!

So, technically, the food is typical—if I can go so far as to call it that—CA1 fare, with typical CA1 portions, at typical CA1 prices. :P

Is the employee cafeteria on the bottom level of the building still there?
I seem to recall the food and prices being pretty decent, but I haven't
been there for over 15 years.

Have not been inside for over a year, however have walked by it and appears to be operational still. I remember they renamed it to the City Deli or something and changed around the hours also (only breakfast and lunch). Btw, dont need to be an employee to eat there, the public can walk in.

Speaking about employee cafeterias, CO used to have a pretty decent and huge one inside its hangars run by Chelsea.

I was just at encounter on 6/25. As laxintl said, I would suggest the $6 valet if you are going to the resturant. The dinner was good. The decor, on the other hand, could use some help, chipped paint on the hand rail and probably 1960's swirl carpet. Good place to watch the Southwest bus operation  Smile , every 20 minutes or sooner 1 southwest plane leaves and 1 lands. Truely amazing to watch.

It originally was the "Host International". I remember going there in 1968. The food was terrible and the atmosphere was like a French brothel. I went another time in 1989 and it had changed names and decor. It was more like a swank Dennys. The food was very average.

The best food and spotting near LAX still is the In & Out Burger.

Very easy. It is quite central. Shouldn't be more than a leisurly 10 minute walk to any terminal

Host International was the company that handled all the restaurants at LAX. It was called the Theme Restaurant before being renamed Encounter

Yes, about 20 years ago. It was good. I think it's a strip club now.

Nope, it's still there, and it's still really good. I do remember from my youth that they used to have headphones to listen to cockpit communications, and I think it was on the 2nd floor. Now only banquet rooms are upstairs, but there's still plenty of window space on the first floor for spotting. It's definitely a worthwhile trip. They have a website here.

Ha, no, you must not have been there in a while. Proud Bird is still the same as it always was. It seems like a place Sinatra and the Rat Pack would have hung out and has excellent clam chowder and tomato salad.
