Class B Clearance. IFR Vs VFR

Lets look at two different scenarios. Where you are flying into an airport inside class B airspace.

In the first scenario you are flying VFR using flight following. Your current controller hands you over to the class B approach controller. In this case I know that the class B controller will give you a specific clearance into or through the class B airspace as appropriate. Without this clearance you can not enter.

In the second scenario you are on an IFR flight plan. Prior to departure from your home airport you received your IFR clearance all the way to your destination airport inside class B airspace.
After a while in the air you're handed over to the class B approach. My question is, will that controller have to give you as an IFR aircraft a specific clearance into class B? My guess is no since you already received your full route clearance before departure.

any thoughts would be apreachiated

Bingo. You just answered your own question. The main reason why VFR flights have to receive a specific clearance with a specific routing (workload permitting) into class B is so that they don't wander aimlessly into the high traffic arrival flows if the controller is unable to accept them. An IFR flight that has already been accepted into the NAS will have priority handling over any VFR flight (on a case-by-case basis,) on top of having his flight plan automatically closed upon arrival at an airport with an IFR control tower.

Golden Shield is correct. That's why it is usually just easier to file if you are going to an airport near or on the outskirts of class B airspace...

It's just easier to file all the time in my opinion.

I am currently doing my instrument training out of New Orleans Lakefront Airport (NEW). When I fly westbound from NEW into MSY's airspace on an IFR flightplan, the controllers do not say "cleared through the Bravo airspace." However, when I am only flying VFR, they do say "cleared through the Bravo airspace."

Just my personal experience...

I wasn't handed over to approach yet for my Class B airspace, I was still with Minneapolis Center and after she said Sioux 77 cleared to enter Bravo Airpace, contact Minneapolis Approach on blah blah blah.

Yes, I did. I went IFR, makes it less of a hassle. I went on a saturday morning, so traffic wasn't too bad, although we were told to maintain best speed or more ( LOL ) till the middle mkr, we had a 757 behind us...

It really is not bad, just pay attention to the radio and don't tick off the controllers, should be fun!
CLT is a lot more busy than RDU, at least from my experience with RDU.

Make sure Sandy`s txpndr is working properly though...  Wink

Technically, if they put you on a radar vector and/or altitude assignment that will take you into Class B while VFR, you're cleared into the Class B. Still, I insist on hearing those magic words "Cleared into Class Bravo Airspace" and get it on the ATC tapes, and I specifically request clearance if I don't hear it even while being radar vectored.
