Too good to be true,

SQ will never have their A380 by December. BTW on SQ's own res system they say aircraft is a 747-400.

I hate to burst any bubbles but until SQ gets 2 or most likely 3 aircraft, don't expect to see anything scheduled much beyond HKG. They need to get crews trained and the rotation really needs 3 aircraft to make it work right.

Quoting Dc10s4ever (Thread starter):

Those tickets were available when they still planned to operate the 380 mid 2006 - there was a thread here in the forums.

Quoting QANTAS077 (Reply 2):

In the thread I talked above it was LHR-SIN....strange that it wasn't SIN-LHR - but maybe it has changed.

Yes they have to be trained but the A-380 is a flagship so a long haul route is possible too.

I assume you mean route??? Perhaps you could explain how they can do it with one aircraft. Take a look at the block times, SIN-LHR-SIN is over 24 hours.

How does a flagship have anything to do with long haul route? Even SQ said that they will first fly SIN-SYD before anything long haul.

SQ, in their right mind, would not schedule an LHR run with just one A380. What would happen if the A380 goes tech? All those people who paid for the new First Class won't be too happy!

If you brought a ticket...and if the aircraft was delayed until sometime in 2007, would you get some kind of super refund or an upgrade or something?

I think airlines have to guarantee a flight, a time, but not an a/c type. Am I correct?

The only guarantee is that they'll transport you from point A to point B. Plenty of disclaimers in the Contract of Carriage for how they won't guarantee it's on the particular flight you booked or at the time it's scheduled, let alone the aircraft type.

No thanks.

I have a personal policy not to fly aircraft until that have been out in commercial service for a few years and/or have proven their stability.

Say what? You don't normally call the airline before booking the ticket asking '...oh, by the way, how long has the 737-800 we'll be flying been in service? 3 years? No....'. Gimme a break.

Woute? Maybe he's really Barbara Walters.

Anybody who buys a ticket now trying to get on one of the first A380 flights is likely to have a very nice 744 ride IHMO. If they can at least put the wing test issue officially to rest then maybe we could talk seriously about it.

this is very very true, and made me chuckle.

A representative from SQ confirmed to me that SIN-SYD is definately the first route sometime in mid-December, with the LHR service following a few weeks later at the beginning of Jan. However I was told this before the recent A380 setback announcement, so it will probably be even later now, as they wont have enough aircraft to guarantee the service.

I would imagine a downgrade to a 744 will involve people being thrown off the flight, although I maybe wrong on this last bit, as I seem to remember seeing somewhere that the SQ 380 will have roughly the same number of actual pax seats as their 744's do?.

It is very possible that the first flight will be from London to Sinagpore, as it may be more efficient since the plane is starting in Europe anyway. When Ethiopian Airlines, for example, has taken delivery of new planes, the inagural services have always started in the US since the plane is built here. They have even gone so far as to ask for the right to sell tickets originainting in Seattle.

Uumm, check your map. SIN-SYD is 7-8hrs which by most American standards would start to be 'long haul', wouldn't you say?

Ok, I will.

Actually, when I do book flights I do look at the aircraft that I will potentially fly on as I am pretty particular on the airlines/planes. Who wouldn't want to fly a reliable airline that flies reliable planes having the piece of mind that they will make it from point A to B safely, (not to mention comfortably)? I wouldn't be surprised if some people are reserved on flying such a new plane, especially when it hasn't been put to full commercial service yet.

This sounds dangerously close to the accounts of all those titanic survivors, who after the boat sank, "suddenly remembered" they had a bad feeling about the trip before the left.

So what happens when the plane gets subbed after booking. For example, next month I am on an ATL-GSO flight that was a MD-88 from when I booked it in March until last week. However, over this past weekend, Delta decided that this flight would now be a 737-800 instead...I've also had upgrades from a 757 to a 767-400 happen at the gate due to maintainence needs in the past...I wouldn't wait another 2 hours until the plane that I booked on would be operating that route...I'll get out of there as soon as possible.

Are you saying eight (8) one (1) hour flights will get you to eight (8) hours flying time quicker than one (1) eight (8) hour flight? A flight hour is from the time the wheels leave the ground until they return to the ground, doesn't matter if they are short flights or long flights.

Not exactly. I apologize, I probably could have worded it better. Hours are important yes, but do they also need X number of takeoffs and landings?

This has not always been the rule for Ethiopian. All 73Ws for example were ferried, so were the 75s (well, they did not serve the US back then, and still did not operate their first flights out of Europe either). Finally, SEA was served only for the last one or two B763 deliveries, and IAD for the last 3 or so.

Not a cat in hells chance of that happening. Do you seriously think SQ will arrange to collect the bird from Airbus, then hop over to LHR to pick up 480 pax on an inaugural flight ?.
