Former Air India B747-400 VT-EVJ

Mon Jul 03, 2006 8:49 pm

Does anyone know the current status of former Air India B747-400 which i believe was returned to Korean Airlines during late March. I have looked under various acars site for the registration HL7409 but found no trace? Also can somebody shed light on when the other 2 former Korean Airlines B747-400s VT-AIC/D will return to Korean Airlines.
Air India i read will be also returning the 2 former Singapore B747-400s VT-AIE/F and the former Air Canada B747-400 combi VT-AIM as these 3 will be converted to Freighters for onward use by Martinair Holland.

ex VT-EFJ has been reregistered HL7606 and painted in full Korean Air Cargo colours BEFORE conversion.
I can´t provide detailed information about the other 744s on lease to Air India. Only thing I know that the lease terms are up to 3 years, VT-AIM shorter.

How is AI replacing the lost aircraft? Losing several 747-400s will produce a serious capacity crunch?

The two ex KE B747-400s with AI, VT-AIC/AID are due to be returned in Nov 2006. The ex SQ B747-400s, VT-AIE/AIF are due to be returned by middle of 2007. VT-AIQ still has two years to go.

Many thanks for all for your replys regarding the former Air India B747-400 VT-EVJ, which is now registered HL7606 and not its previous identity HL7409.
I have managed to find a photo of this aircraft on this site with its new identity HL7606 looking very smart in full Korean Airlines colours but with additional cargo titles in preparation to being converted to a full freighter with SCD and blanked out passenger windows. I guess the remaining 2 B747-400s that Korean have leased out to Air India will also be converted to full freighter configuration when they return off lease, as Korean Airlines probably do not require the addition passenger capacity?

The 777-200ERs and the -200 which they got from United are replacing several of them. Not to mention that they will be receiving their new 777s (-200LR and -300ER) starting late this year.

Early next year. (see: Air India New Boeing Delivery Schedules And Routes (by Karan69 Feb 17 2006 in Civil Aviation) )

When do they retire their 18 year old 747-300s?

The only Captains on B747-337s are due to retire late this year. No more A310 Captains are being trained for this type. That means by the end of this year the B747-337s should be phased out.
