How Much Longer For Delta MD-80s?

Mon Jul 03, 2006 11:33 pm

Hello all and hope everyone is having a good holiday weekend..although i have to work  Sad Anyway, when i was at IND the other day taking some videos, i was wondering how much longer Delta plans to keep the MD-80/88s in their fleet. It seems like they can keep going for a long time...maybe not as long as NW's DC-9s  Smile Any info. would be appreciated...thanks  Smile

p.s. Are the MD-90s still in the fleet?

There are others on the forum that keep closer tabs on fleet statuses, but I think the MD-90s are still in DL's fleet. But how much longer?

The MD-88 is the "backbone" of their domestic fleet. While they are noisy and swill fuel, I think that it will take DL a few years to recover enough financially to consider buying replacements.

In the meantime, I see DL turning over more routes to their regionals, especially those flying E-jets or CRJ7s.

Does anyone know how those 737-800s are working out for them? And for AA for that matter.
If it was said by us, then it must be true.

Considering DL's significant recent aicraft retirements, I don't think they can afford to retire even more aircraft. At least for the time being.

Yes, the MD-88's & the MD-90's are both still in the fleet and I would not expect them to go anywhere in the near or medium future. Most of the 90's are based out of SLC it seems with the 88's out of CVG & ATL. However, I believe it is no secret that the 738's will be the long term backbone of DL's domestic and short-haul International (Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean) fleet.

Frm what I understad from my cousin who is a DL pilot DL will be taking delivery of about 12-15 738's next year and of course the 732's will all be retired by the end of September I believe. There is no end in sight for the MadDogs though as they will continue to be a viable role for them in the DL fleet. The big fleet changes would come after Bankruptcy when I think we could expect to see a major 777/787 order as well as E-170/190 order, all of which would be after BK exit. However, they may not wait on the 777 order as they need those NOW!

How much of a difference is there between the MD-88 and MD-90? I know the engines on the -90 are a little more bulky...

Does the bankruptcy court judge in charge of Delta's case know about this?

---------------

The DL MD88 fleet is going to be around for a very long time to come....DL has a huge MD88 fleet that is well suited for the short to medium range routes that they fly.....the fleet is rather young and, as we know, Douglas airplane are built to last forever with proper maintainance.

Most assume that when the MD88s are ready for replacement, Boeing will have already moved along from the 737NG to the Y1 aircraft.......and DL will replace the MD88s/90s (and 752s) with variants in the Y1 family.

..four weeks ago, after a DL flight from DFW to ABQ, I asked the FO the same question. He stated:

(1) The MD's still have a lot of life,
(2) DL is seriously thinking about re-enginening the MD's (a previously discussed topic on this forum.

I really hope if the replacement is the 737RS, that Delta puts IFE on them. The 757-200 replacement though will definately have IFE.

As far as AA's 737-800s I've noticed that they are flying numerously from KDFW and other parts around Texas. That's what I heard from a friend after he noticed not seeing any 737-800s at SJC or SFO for almost a year.
