Questions About John Travolta And His 707

Thu Jul 06, 2006 6:11 am

I imagine there have been lots of talk about JT since way before my time but I am intrigued by his own airliner!

Does he lease it from Qantas or something? Is that why it has Qantas all over it? And is the "JT" part of the N707JT normal on a private airliner? As in would any other individual get there initials in the reg? (or even IS N707JT the reg??!)

I know JT does a lot of good work with his craft and from what I read in the media helped a great deal after Katrina.

Also, whats his Spirit of Friendship Tour all about?

IIRC the registration on one of Tom Cruise's jets is N-yada yaa yada-TC for his initials.

The basic answers... no.. he first leased that jet from a leasing company, then later bought it in the mid 1990's. He is a Qantas 'Good Will Chairman' and part of the agreement was he could paint the plane in Qantas colors. He also did an around the world trip as part of his goodwill trip. There are many pictures from this trip in the data base. Back about 8 years ago Oprah had JT on talking about one of his movies. She suprised him by having the then owner of registration N707JT on the phone and he agreed to give Travolta that number for his 707. Anyone can have any number they want if it's still open. Nissan the car manufacture has a GV that has the number N155AN.

Also, try a search... Travolta and his 707 is WEL-WELL covered on A.net.

I have a $20 bill I'd like him to have framed and put in his 707. The serial number is B D 00000707 C.

I believe they also paid for his gas, wear and tear and trained him on the 744.

Indeed, he's a qualified 747-400 First Officer

I presume JT cant just get in the plane and go for a spin after Sunday lunch - he'd have to have a co polit, engineer etc with him.

As a matter of interest what are the rules for numbers of pilots and private jets. Obviously on commercial flights you have to have two but privately what is the rule? Is there a size limit where you have to have two pilots? What is the biggest private jet that one could fly legally on thier own?
300, 310, 319, 320, 321, 332, 333, 342, 343, 345, 346, 380, 707, 727, 733, 734, 735, 73G, 738, 742, 743, 744, 752, 753,

I do know that Citations can be flown with 1 pilot if they carry oxygen.

It depends on the certification of the aircraft. His 707 does require 3 pilots, which highlights the main issue, which is cockpit complexity. The more complex the cockpit, the more pilots you need

All Citations DO carry oxygen and no not all of them can be flown single pilot. Only some models which are certified for single pilot and the pilot also has to be suitably qualified. Oxygen has nothing to do with it.

So John Travolta is certified to fly a 747. Has he done so, often?

Anyone can go here:

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNAV_inquiry.asp

and check for available regs and reserve one or more. You don't even have to own an airplane.
