Pan Am Flight Academy At MIA

Thu Jul 06, 2006 11:04 pm

I was driving around MIA and saw this building with the famous logo still hanging. What role did this building have for Pan Am back in the day? I also noticed that there was a swimming pool behind it! Did crews lay over here?!!

I'm not sure about the role of it back in the days. But I'm sure the pool there was for the students. Take the Florida weather, you will need a place to cool off. They lived in dorms close to the school, didn't they? So I guess it's part of the housing.

Take Lufthansa's Flight School, ATCA in Goodyear, Arizona, they have 2 pools for us students as well.

Cheers,

Just a thought, but perhaps it was a training centre and the swimming pool was part of it? Water landing training etc.?

Thanks

Lufthansa has those inside, to allow for that training in bad weather as well, and also since you have to simulate waves, etc. But you never know...

Swimming pool was for flight attendant training on use of life rafts.

It is still a very active flight training facility, one of several located near MIA. See http://www.panamacademy.com/

Students are housed in nearby motels/hotels.

Thanks for the info. So the building used to be the main Pan Am F/A training facility? Is that all they did there?
