Nassau Int'l Airport Renamed

Fri Jul 07, 2006 4:23 am

In an over-the-top ceremony, Nassau's main airport was renamed today (at least that explains why they were busy repaving the roads around the airport over the past two weeks). It is now:

Lynden Pindling International Airport (Windsor Field)

One rather sarcastic (I shall leave it up to you to decide how accurate) remark I've heard: "It's only appropriate to name the airport after Lynden Pindling... after all, nothing there works."

But seriously, I hate it when airports are named after politicians. They should have used the name of one of our Bahamian aviation pioneers.

Well, other than the corruption and drug running allegations (were they proven?), he sounds worthy of being honored.

I fear this may be off topic (or non-av), but...

AFAIK, the drug running allegations were not proven, simply because the man never had to stand trial. The U.S. would have liked to get their hands on him, but he still had enough power to prevent extradition.

The corruption has been proven, but he still avoided punishment, first because he still held a seat in parliament, later because he was old and ill. Nowadays, Bahamians are too brainwashed to remember both sides of the "Sir Lynden Story."

So funny, I was in Nassau on Friday, and when we were boarding out flight ot Freeport, I saw a new sign "Lynden Pindling International Airport". I guess they unveiled the name prior to the naming ceremony. Doesn't this come 4 days too soon? After all, the Bahamas independence day is July 10, and Pindling and his PLP are the ones who campaigned for independence from Britain in 1973.

Best,

To the 100000s of thousands of people who go there every year, it will still be... people still call EWR "Newark" instead of "Newark-Liberty"...

I think it's fitting considering the current state of the airport.  Wow! I agree with TransIsland, it should have been named after an aviator, not a politician. Granted he did alot for the Bahamas but at the end of the day, he did what he was elected to do. (Not a special favour) It's not as if almost every other thing in Nassau isn't already named after him like the Subdivision near Millennium Gardens if thats not what they changed it to.

I'm just grateful that they didn't do it to FPO/MYGF, thank God it's a private airport and the Port Authoriy won't even CONSIDER doing something like that.

Nassau is the ONLY airport I hate more than Doha.

The only good thing was that you could dump Nassau and fly from Paradise Island on Chalks, two minutes walk from home  Smile

Superb FF programme too, after your 10th flight you got a tee-shirt  rotfl

You're right... no worries there! They'd be more likely to name FPO in honour of Wallace Groves or Edward St. George.... I'd love to see the looks on the faces of some PLPs if they did that!  Wink

I think if they absolutely had to name an airport for SLOP, they should've done it to Congo Town/South Andros. After all, that was his seat.

MIA and BKK are at the top of my worst airport list, but NAS is prolly a close third.

Too bad they're no longer flying. I never got my t-shirt.  Wink
