AA MD-80's "black Nose"

does anyone know why AA painted a black dot on the nose of their md-80's???
Give me a break, I created this username when I was a kid...

I believe it's a protective coating. There was a time when the 'black dot' was common. Then, I believe it was actually rubber or something. Later, paints/coatings could achieve the same thing and were applied to the radome. Maybe AA went back to it out of tradition a la the flat black paint under the windshield on SW planes?

I *love* the black dot on AA's huge MD-80 fleet. It fits the jetliner perfectly and hope they stay that way.
