US To Add 6 More Seats On Its 319's

Sat Jul 08, 2006 5:59 am

US Airways plans this fall to add six more seats -- another row -- to its coach cabin on its A319s. No changes in the first-class cabin of the A319s are planned.

Legroom is already tight on these birds, what kind of legroom can we expect on the updated 319's?

Looks like it's just a standardization between the HP and US 319s. HP 319s had 22 rows with 30-32" of pitch, and US 319s had 21 rows with 32" of pitch. Now they'll all be 22 rows....

What will the pitch be like with the added row? If its at 32" now, what can we expect with an added row?

Could they also use the thinner seats like LX and LH ? This way, the smaller legroom wouldn't be felt.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

It's not just the 319s that are getting more seats...

They're just claiming the generic 30"-32", not giving a specific number. They're removing a closet, so that will help some.

They could, but they won't.  Silly

I think they should do like Spirit has done to their 319's and possibly their 320's if they could. Remove half the galley out, then add just one lav aircraft left, kind of like the old 73-200's and add even more seats!

We are also planning on modifiying the 321's to be reduced to 16 FC seats...and adding coach seats I'm assuming. They did say this was not definite yet however

Everything is pretty much going to the HP way of seating...who really needs the closet anyway?

First class passengers use the closet to have their coats hung up...it's part of the level of service in F...I'd rather have my sportsjacket hung up in a closet than have to wear it (and let it get wrinkled up) or put in the overhead (which can get a little dirty up there). Whenever I'm in F and wearing a sportsjacket, I expect for it to be hung up. Another downgrade to US' service that will keep this Preferred member on Delta more.

Last time I checked they had a spot behind the last row of FC to hang up coats...it's not a closet but a rack to at least keep it from getting wrinkled. Quite honestly I don't think we are really aiming for customers looking for a traditional "first class" experience. They are offering it more as a step up from coach. They are referring to it internally as "business casual". Our Envoy service however is going to remain competitive with other carriers (or try to anyhow).

Oh Mary, there's still a space to hang up your precious "sportjacket". Is that really still a term? All of the fashion world is a tither.........

Seriously, USAir and America West had fairly similar approaches to domestic travel pre-merger, so I'm certain they'll attempt to appease the same client base they had.

Speaking of appeasing client base, the last time I flew on DL, they tossed my coat in an overhead, and had no IFE....

That's sure not how they're pricing the fares.  Yeah sure

I wonder if they have loaded all the YUP fares system wide. Many times you can get a FC seat for cheaper than a full Y ticket.

US had the same types of fares pre-merger, as does every other major airline. That's just my point--US is charging the same as other airlines, but providing an inferior product.

well good news is that even HP can hang up your coat... they may not have closets but they have hooks in the back for the hangers...

That's probably why we (HP) never sold many actual FC seats...most of the seats go to Elites, day of departure upgrades, and FF tickets.  Smile

I might also add that the A321 fleet will be reduced to 16 first class seats from the current 26..not exactly sure how many rows of coach they'll be adding on this aircraft though...current config is F26Y143.

25 seats will be added to Economy on the A330 aircraft starting...I believe, this fall.

I agree. The A320 Family have a great asset in the huge Galley #1, as it can take 8 half-carts, 2 hot-ovens and 4 ATLAS carriers (or 12 if no ovens) plus beverage makers while the 737's Galley #1 only have room for 3 half-carts, 2 ATLAS carriers and beverage makers - which necessitates the need for a Galley #2...

The A320 Family Galley #1 can be identical in the back while having a lav next to it, so that should be enough for airlines these days, as most carriers only serve or sell pretzels, chocolate bars and cold sandwiches, which means there is no need for 3-4 hot-ovens in the back. easyJet has a half-size galley in the back of their 156-seat A319s and they have plenty of goods to sell. AF also have a half-size galley in the back of their A318.

I noticed that LH now have a A321 seatmap with 190 seats, up from 182 or 184, so maybe they have simplified their galleys too...?

The little hooks on the partition at the back of first class are pathetic. As soon as the guy in the last row puts his seat back, it smashes anything on the hook. Several times, I have seen the last row left tilted back when I got on and had to move the seat just to use the hangers. I still wouldn't put anything more than a windbreaker on those hooks.

Is "windbreaker" still a correct term?  Yeah sure

Common sense and the smart thing to do would have been to take a look at the size of the 319 and 320 fleets on each size of the operation and make the changes according to which side has the larger fleet. If they had done this, the 319 would be in US configuration and the 320 would be in HP configuration.

Perhaps, but then they'd be removing seats from the 319's on the HP side - why do that when you can get the extra 6 seats worth of revenue off of every US A319 on every flight. That's a lot of extra capacity over the course of the year, and could likely pay for the extra cost of doing the work.

Not that I like reduced pitch, but that doesn't seem to be how airlines think anymore.

I flew SIN-LAX-LAS recently with the long leg on SQ Raffles and short leg on HP First. The HP flight lacked the "First" feeling to say the least

Bjornstrom, I sat in -F-class on a CO 733 in row 3, and the pax in front of me reclined his seat back into my lap. I didnt find that to be a comfortable First class experience. However back to the original topic, it shows that HP took over US and is standardizing the fleet. HP 319s have no closet and 3 lavatories, one forward and 2 aft. Plus overwing exit row has the window seats A and F taken out.
A line is evidence that other people exist.

Right because they are standardizing the fleet to add more seats and make more money so that means one was bigger in the "MERGER"....... Give me a break.

Depends on how much more "money" they make after a bunch of elites jump ship when they cut the F-cabins on the A321s.
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

so, the word is this will START in the fall - anyone have any idea when the entire US 'east' 319 fleet is scheduled to be FINISHED with the cabin re-fitting?
