Best Experiences Aboard A US Carrier

Thu Jun 22, 2000 3:08 am

I'd like to see what's the best experience you people have had aboard a US airline such as Delta, United, Northwest, Continental, American, USAirways, America West, TWA and Alaska Airlines. I know that UAL and NW and others have been given a bad rap by the customers from time to time because of a/c problems, bad service and delays and cancellations. Even in large carriers like UAL, there are many fine employees who like to deal with and help people. I've heard some better things happening aboard US carriers before, and I'd welcome more accounts of your best experiences.

Well it was in 1993, they were still USAir. Flew from LGW to charlotte, then on to MCO. It was great, thats all i can say. I bet they are better on long haul, now they have the new 330's.

When I was 11 in 1995, I went to Disneyworld for the second time. I was flying Washington-Orlando aboard Delta on, I think an MD 80, not sure. But anyway, the flight attendant was really nice to me. I remember she asked me where I was going to? And I said Disneyworld. And she was like sooooo astonished and stuff, and I was like, where else do you go to in Orlando. Of course, I was very dof then...I hadn't heard of all the other cool places! But she was nice....nicer than when I went on AA last year from MIA-MCO. I was on that 757 that had that classic colour scheme on to commemorate 50 years of service or something. Anyway, we were treated like sardines on the plane!!! Service is generally MUCH better elsewhere in the world.

I have only flown United twice, and that was a round trip JFK-LHR, and I must say that I was very impressed. The 767-300 was roomy, the inflight entertainment was very good and the service was nothing short of excellent. The cabin was clean, the flights were on time and the ground staff at both Heathrow and JFK were very friendly and knowledgeable. Having flown this route with BA, VS, and AA and JFK - AMS with KLM, I would not hesitate to use UA for this flight again. Here are my reasons:

AA - the 767's were ok, but the A300 I felt were rather tight and small, service was good, but the lines at JFK were monsterous. Service was good.. United was better.

VS - I feel that no airline goes out of their way to make you as comfortable as Virgin, however, if you are on one of their 744's for more than 6 hours, you want to be very short and very thin, especially if the flight is fully booked. (and when is it not)

BA - Another good airline, but the same boat as VS, if you are lucky enough to cross on the 777 you should be ok, but the 747's leave a lot to be desired.

I have never flew Air India on this route, and I am not sure that I want to.. - any comments?

When ever we are nonreving on a trip with delta, all the employees seem to go out of their way to helping us get on a flight. Best was Ric-cvg-jfk-muc-jfk-ric. The agents were very helpful on our first nonrev international trip. We forgot some red pass that is needed to go international, and we almost missed our flight, but the agent went wayyyy out of her way to help us...we also got first class on all of our flights. Nothing like sitting in a seat almost fully reclined, eating ice cream and chocolates, watching your plane on your personal monitor 30 miles south of godthob greenland while listening to soothing music, and wathing the northern lights mystically dance up and down outside your window, while you are also thinking about your breakfast that will be served 2 hours later!! Ahh how wonderful, cant get any better..

My best expierence was when I was young and my grandfather was a captain for the L1011 briefly before he retired. When we got on a flight from Miami to New York we were shocked to hear his voice as he welcomed everyone aboard. Once we landed he brought us up to see the cockpit and then continue on to the tarmac to show us everything about the plane. I could have stayed there all day.

The best international flight on a US carrier for me was:

September 1995, Paris (ORY) to JFK, AA #45, B767-300ER

September 1997, London/Heathrow to JFK, UA 002, B767-300ER

May 2000, London/Gatwick to EWR, Continental, B777-224ER

The worst:

All TWA flights to and from Europe taken from 1980 to 1989,
about 2 per year (JFK-FCO-JFK, JFK-CDG-JFK, JFK-LHR-JFK),
all on Boeing 747-131 or L1011 aircraft. Absolutely horrible.
Always late.

American Airlines, SJU-JFK, 1990, Airbus A300-600.

The best experiences I've had flying domestically have been aboard Midwest Express planes. Clean planes, nice, comfy, wide leather seats, business class service, meals served on real china, complimentary's the way flying SHOULD be. YX truly puts NWA, AA, DL and UA to shame with their value per dollar fares and service.

PIT-CDG nonstop

Great flight, in COACH nonetheless! Attentive flight attendants, often drink service and good food. Only marred by broken bathroom. Flight left on time, arrived a few minutes early. Better than a lot of my experiences in first domestic!

LAX-YYZ in Alaska's First Class in 1992. AS offered an international style first class meal service, along with constant F/A attention. No in-flight entertainment, but that was a small price to pay. Even Air Canada was miles behind, but things didn't work out for AS on that route.

Also, SFO-MKE on Midwest was a very enjoyable experience, despite a cancelled flight and luggage problem on the return. The food was truly exceptional, and I have a serious weakness for chocolate chip cookies.

My worst flight was between PHX-SJC on America West in 1998 (the only time where just about everything imaginable has gone wrong on the same flight). Well...actually, we didn't crash, so I guess not everything.

Also, a Mexicana flight from San Francisco that only made it as far as San Diego due to a hydraulic problem. I arrived in Mexico 27 hours late.

I, fortunatley haven't had any bad or poor experiences on any of my flights.
My worst flight would have been two summers ago on a USAirways DC-9-30 STL-CLT. It was a full flight (I volunteered to be bumped, but I didn't). I had to sit in the far back next to the engine, the plane was also quite warm.

Among my best experiences...USAirways ILM-CLT-BOS, the flight crew on the CLT-BOS were VERY hospitable. For example, one of my classmates (travelling with a school group including myself) spilled Junior Mints on his seats and didn't notice for awhile. Well, nature called to him and brunch was being served and so as he got up to make his way to the bathroom, the f/a stopped him and told him about the huge chocolate stain on his butt(In nicer terms than that). Half of the coach class on the MD-80 was cracking up while he was cleaning his pants in the bathroom. While he was in there the f/a was chuckling and told us not to laugh to much when he came back. When he did, the f/a's gave him a blanket to wrap around his pants (which he could of course keep) and asked if there was anything he needed. Besides that incident, the flight was very enjoyable, as the captain informed us of our position a couple times and the f/a's were nice.
Also, I flew on Midway Airlines' CRJ ILM-RDU (its was cheaper than driving) and on the 30min flight we got drinks, mints, and hot towels in our spacious leather seats. Good serivce.
Anyway, there's my better experiences with flying. I hope those with bad ones have better future service or try different airlines(USAirways, Midway).

My best expericen was on an American 727-200 from RSW to RDU on April 18, 1991. It was my birhtday, and I was traveling with my parents, sister, cousins and aunt and uncle, who were nice enough to give their four upgrades to the four kids (cousins, sister and me). Because their were two empty seats in F/C, the FAs upgraded my aunt and uncle (only my parents got screwed). I got to go up to the cockpitt before the flight and sit in the captain's seat (the photo is still in our living room). During the flight, we ate shrimp cocktail, filet mignon and pecan pie. The captain came on the PA to give some details about the flight and airplane (saying that each engine put out more power than all the cars in the Indy 500) and also to wish me a happy birhtday b/c I wanted to be an airline pilot (didn't happen -- now I'm soon to be a lawyer). He also stopped by my seat and chatted for a while. It was only a 90 minute flight, but it AA truly made me feel "special" on my birthday and I will never forget it.
