Spotting @ MCI?

Sat Jul 08, 2006 11:16 am

I don't know where I should put this, but here it goes:

I'll be in MCI July 21 - 23 for a Royals game (11 down, 30 to go) and me and my dad need something to do. Anywhere where we could get some good spotting in? Anything else to do aswell?

edit: almost forgot, any hotels that have a look airside @ MCI? We've booked everything but the hotel.

Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Actually the best place that I have been to without any hassles is the General Aviation area. Once you get your bags go to the white phone and look up General Aviation or look up "Executive Beechcraft." Exective Beech is the resident (and only) FBO on the field. When you call them tell them you would like to get a ride to thier lobby and use thier facilities. While in the van or at the FBO tell the folks that you would like to do some spotting and I wouldnt be suprised if they give you a guided tour. Its been a while since I have been there but at one point I was able to walk out to the end of the ramp at the taxiway and take photos.

Another suggestion is to just ask someone at the gate.

Go Royals!

There are some good spotting places around MCI. the best place is along the outer roads along I-435/I-29. The outer road to the north is called "Outer Road", but the one to the south (same side as the airport) is NW Prarie View Rd/Outer Road N.. At a point along NW Prarie View it puts you less than .5 miles north of the threshhold of 19R. You should have some good views of landings from here. Not to mention, the FedEx and UPS terminal is toward the north side of along 19R so you might see a widebody or two taxi into there. You could also folow NW Prairie View (Outer Rd. N.) north to where it turns into NW 136th St. and turns west. Take a left (south) on N. Nevada Ave. and go about 1.5 miles. This puts you exactly one mile west of the airport (19R). As for hotels, there are a ton right there by the airport to the east. The best view is probably from the Airport Hilton. Just make sure your room faces west.
