AA Adds 777 MIA-LAX And Takes It Away!

Mon Jul 10, 2006 8:36 am

With all the hoopla recently about AA adding a 777 MIA-LAX-MIA, and the reasons being given about how the route demanded a 3 class service, the plane was just sitting in MIA all day, etc., why has AA cancelled it after December 14, 2006?

There are a lot of cities that demand 3 class service into LAX.

I would think that AA wants to send the aicraft else where, maybe apply for a new city in Asia?

It is not to add a new city in Asia.

American Airlines is adding a 7th daily non-stop on MIA-LAX the day after the 772 is pulled.

Not exactly sure why they are pulling it, but it was put on MIA-LAX for fleet usage maximization, not to offer 3-class service. American Airlines, however, decided to take advantage of the healthy premium demand on the route and offer 3-class service, rather than two class, like they usually do on domestic 777 routes.

Just a question. When AA adds a 7th daily flight between MIA-LAX, which type of aircraft will it use?

Is the 7th daily MIA-LAX going to be a permanent add or just for the winter?

Another MIA_SFO flight would be nice too!!

And what ever happened to the rumored MIA-PHX when US/HP pulled off the route?

737-800.

Right now, just for the winter, but if the flight can do well enough it will continue. Last year's 6th daily MIA-LAX was also winter-only, but went year-round.

It was delayed from a September start. It may still happen in December, time will tell. I for sure think it will happen soon enough, but who knows.

In 2000 I flew on a United Airlines B777 on the LAX-MIA route. That was a nice ride!!!!! The plane continued to Sao Paulo (GRU).

Unfortunately San Jose is sitting in stale water as far as American Airlines is concerned. With the Narita 777 flight ending on October, American can finally move on and close the chapter in San Jose.

The days were good! Over the years United Airlines Miami operation saw:

SFO - 777, 747, 767, D10
LAX - 777, 747, 767
IAD - 777, 767, D10
ORD - 777, 767
DEN - 777, 767

This 777 can be a plane that could be used on additional flights to Brazil from MIA during the day ?

Add the 74L (SP) to that list. 914/915 was operated by a 74L for a while on the EZE-MIA-IAD-CDG trip.

AA MIA-LAX 777 service is a 3 class airplane but will not be a 3 class service like JFK Transcons. The Business Class cabin will be sold as Coach. Perhaps the 777 capacity is needed somewhere else or SABRE might not be updated.

Really?

I think they would be foolish not to use three cabins. Trust me on MIA-LAX there is always demand for premium product. Especially early in the morning when all the connections come in from deep S. America.
The front cabin could be used for international F class premium pax and the J cabin would take all the mileage upgrades and J connections.

Yep, MIA-LAX was a non AFS flight and was two class. GREAT for transcons as elites could book into the J cabin and not worry about upgrading. It's been gone a while though, has it not? There's still a 763 on the route.

It was 3-class in SABRE as recently as two weeks ago. That might have changed.

Even with all the flights AA/AE have cut, after WN, AA/AE is still the 2nd largest operator out of SJC....and then there is the SJC-SEA codeshare with AS......I've flown on a few AS codeshare flights, it makes life much easier for me...

Right now market forces doesn't dictate AA expanding SJC, but they do have enough flights out of SJC as well as a decent Admirals Club to keep it as a nice "mini-hub"

This is weird. On AA.com now if I try to book it, I get a choice of either Economy (starting at row 20) or First (rows 2,3,4). There is no way to book the business cabin - and I'm logged in so aa.com knows my Platinum status.

I thought MIA-LAX demnanded 3 class service anyway. They should put a 3 class 763ER on the route. Btw, what happened to the 767 MCO used to get.

I doubt it, though the SJC-NRT flight does bring in some Admirals Club Members, the majority use it for all the other flights...Try using the Admirals Club at 7-8 a.m.-its packed to the brim....

Well I hope you are right... it would be nice to keep it. I just have a feeling that they would close it because it seems that the only domestic clubs are in big cities, cities with international flights, or OA hubs.

I know what you are saying, but the city size really doesn't matter...its the operational side which is more important..

for example....ATL, DEN, PHL, YYZ, DCA, CDG, and FRA aren't the strongest AA cities and they aren't OneWorld hubs either...yet AA has Admirals Club in all of those cities..

ATL -- Competiton with DL
DEN -- COmpetition with UA
PHL -- Competition with US
YYZ -- Competition with AC
DCA -- Necessary for all the Government types.
CDG -- Second biggest operation in Europe
FRA -- Must have a lot of premium passengers as it ranks a 777 from DFW

Although you might be right because SNA and SAN still have clubs, so we will just have to wait and see.

Good list.. checkmark ..

My only comment on that though is that AA can't be spending on Admirals Clubs just because there is competition...they would go broke doing that.. Smile

"mini-hub", that's a joke, right. I belive there are just as many or one or two more flights by AA out of SFO than SJC. SFO is also listed in their inflight magaine. AA is SFO second largest carrier in terms of PAXs, just like SJC.

Admiral Clubs are not built for compieition. They are built because of strong, usually pre-exisiting, loyal business flyer base. The business flyer base comes first, then the club. At all these airports, AA can use a contracted premium lounge if they desired.

Why is it a joke? Because you say so? I've given good reasons as to why SJC can be considered a "mini-hub".....and what does the amount of AA flights out of SFO have anything to do with it?

Well, i guess using your reasoning makes SFO a nice little "mimi hub" for AA also? AA and its partner airlines , ie: AS and Oneworld carriers, have a nice set up. it seems people on this form use the word "hubs and focus cities" more liberally than what they really are.
