World Cup 2014 In South America, EK Should Prepare

Mon Jul 10, 2006 9:15 pm

Well as it is confirmed that the World Cup 2014 will be in Latin America or South America. I think Argentina and Brazil would be the biggest contenders. And since EK is the Official Carrier for the World Cup for 2010 and 2014, EK must be planning to open alot of new destinations from now till 2014.

Do you think they would do 2 to 3 city stops in South America? Like Dubai- Sao Paolo - Buenos Airies - Lima - Dubai or something like that?

The now have almost 8 years to prepare for these destinations but with the continuous delays of the A 380's, would that affect these routes?

If they are to be able to cover atleast 6 cities in South America by 2014, they need to start flying there very soon.

Any news or suggestions?

Do you think EK would establish a second main hub outside of DXB in the future?

Maybe MIA which is located pretty well for a South American network?

With the US requiring VISA to all nationals from Latin America even for transiting, I don't think MIA is a good idea.

How about AKL ? or SYD ?...
Could even be Europe if your talking about future hubs...
Im thinking tho.. wouldnt the A345's be better suited to a S.america link up ?
I only think an A380 would be better suited if they get rights to sell seats between S.American countries..

personally I worry at the growth that EK is expanding...

they dont seem the kind of airline that would take kindly to losing grace should oil prices try to put the stop on further expansion...

Just my schillings worth...

World Cup will be probably in Brazil, Argentina (hosted the 1978 cup), Mexico (1970 and 1986) and others are giving their votes for Brazil.

There are comments on EK website about GIG and EZE as destinations in South America (IMO they could fly GIG, EZE, GRU, LIM, BOG and CCS). In a World cup scenario, we will see a lot of charter flights.

Where did you get this information? True, it's South America's turn BUT according to FIFA none of the South America countries CURRENTLY have enough stadiums that comply with today's FIFA standards.

USA and China expressed interest in hosting WC 2014 in case South America (the decision won't be announced by 2008 by the way) doesn't get it.

Way to early to do any planning.

All Asia and Africa obtained from South America the commitment to vote on Asia World Cup in 2002 and Africa in 2010. Due to this South America (Brazil) will receive the World Cup in 2014. Main Europe countries also agree with this.

Brazil will get the Cup. Petrobras, Vale do Rio Doce (ore-oil world largest exporter), Banks and other major groups is engaged to help the government to build new stadiums (even Maracana will be prepared) or to improve some. We have 1 stadium ready, Arena da Baixada (CWB). Arena Petrobras (very close to GIG) and Mineirao (very close to PLU) also announced improvements, and we have 8 years ! Even South Africa stadiums are not ready!! It's so early to talk about capacity to run a world cup in 2014.

I would like to see the Cup in Brazil as well, but we do have to wait until 2008 for the official decision. 2 years can be a long time and who knows what can happen in the meantime.

WC 2014
An excerpt from the link above:

Brazil is the leading candidate for the World Cup. By March 17, 2004 the CONMEBOL associations voted unanimously to adopt Brazil as their sole candidate. However, on April 13, 2006 FIFA president Sepp Blatter said that does not necessarily mean that the tournament would be in Brazil. "For the time being, I don't think Brazil has a stadium for the Cup." But it should be noted, that he had only visited stadiums in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. On July 4, 2006 Blatter said the 2014 World Cup would probably be held in the country.

I don't see how a World Cup in Brazil would help EK so much, official carrier or not. For once, the geographical location of their main hub is even a hindrance, not a help. The vast majority of people who travel for the World Cup come from Europe or South America. Many of them travel on charter flights or additional flights scheduled by their respective home carriers. EK would have to have very attractive fares to convince European fans to travel East to Dubai before turning around and head for South America. Likewise, Asian fans will travel East (with a stop in Canada or the US, I imagine) and we will probably see increased capacity or even new flights. That leaves EK with fans from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent and, as a group, they're not the most active travellers when it comes to attending World Cup games, especially this far away.

As far as EK establishing a second hub, the 2014 World Cup will not have much to do with that decision if it ever happens. The revenue from World Cup flights alone cannot cover the cost of an extra hub.

The title of Official Carrier for the World Cup is a marketing title without any operational consequence. Teams are still free to pick their own carrier to travel to/from/within the host country, and any major carrier based in the host country stands to benefit as much, if not more, in the short term as the official carrier.

EK didn't sign on to be the official carrier for this past World Cup just to get a few more passengers from Dubai to Germany, but to have the exclusive right to advertise in front of a billion people during the final game, not to speak of all the other games.

Visa issues notwithstanding, I don't think that AA and UA would roll out the red carptet to welcome EK, quite the contrary. The public's perception of Middle Eastern countries is such that Dubai Ports World couldn't buy the company managing 6 ports in the US due to supposed, and irrelevant, security concerns. You think that setting up a Middle East carrier hub in the middle of Florida will fare better ?

I've read in other theads about the possibility of EK running their South American flights namely EZE, GRU or GIG through West Africa namely Accra. That seems pretty viable as it is a pretty strategic location right between DXB and South America.

MIA is a good idea, just not with the purpose of feeding traffic to Latin America.

I also don't the World Cup is any reason for Emirates to start service to South America. However, I do think that South America will make a strong market for Emirates, especially Brazil. The World Cup should have no affect on this. It is a one time thing.

I would say DUB in Ireland, as EK is showing a huge interest in buying EI, when the airline is privatised in september. Through DUB, I think just about everywhere in the americas is reachable without aircraft like 345's.

Just because your the official airline doesnt mean anything, Southwest is the official airline of many teams and leagues, and yet they don't serve a lot of the destinations that come along with that (Canada for one, Boston, etc) US Airways is the official carrier of the Philadelphia Eagles, and yet, the Eagles fly Northwest, EK paid to be the official airline, in terms of service and destinations it doesnt mean anything.

Indeed. VARIG is the official airline of the Brazilian team - maybe this explain the demise of the Brazil in the World Cup!  Sad

Anyway: it is clear that GRU (and as secondary options EZE and GIG) could be future destinations of EK.

There have been huge rumours about EK and South America, it has been said that they will first start GRU and EZE, then GIG and then BOG and CCS, maybe LIM also. In 5 years time, i can see the first three destinations operating, the others maybe in 7-9 years.

I obtained a very good deal with AF for a GIG-CDG-HAM r/t ticket , US$ 890,00. But be in mind that fuel prices are very high, so it's not possible to compare with the past years.
In USA 1994 World Cup prices are not higher than in the past years, but you have to reserve and confirm your ticket as early as you can.

Ohh I meant South Africa not South America. And the problem is I don't graduate college untill may of 2009 and so I don;t now where I'll end up living. I might just book out of whichever city is the cheapest and then make my way to that city by somethin like southwest or so.

I was lookin at schedules and if I connect throguh Europe I can probably spend a whole day in the city since I land in the morning and leave at night.

Joint bids are out of the question as Sepp Blatter already stated. Ask the Netherlands and Belgium how they feel about that. I'll be heading to WC2010 no doubt about it, hopefully DL can make an ATL-JNB non-stop work. Now, Brazil will most likely get it, however there has been a huge push by Australia, China, and the USA. I would like to see it in Australia or New Zealand but I don't know if that will happen. and NZ will give me a premium price to fly there. Will this make EK go to Brazil, no but it will market them for the future.

Could some one please evaluate why South America would be an important market for a EK, a middle eastern airline ? I just do not see this coming and
actually believe more in their North American Expansion as well as Europe and of course Asia. I trust they go were the business is and so far there is not much trade between the Middle East and South America. I am just asking
because I have seen this discussion here many times.

I flew CCS-AMS with KL in 1997 and there was quite a few people who looked arab and were most likely continuing on to the middle east. I asked my dad about it since he is both of arab backgorund and has done the CCS-Europe route many times for his company and says it is very common to see that many people from CCS to the middle east. Also there is quite a big arab community in Venezuela. I still don't know if is enough to fill a A340...maybe they can get rights to fly people to europe and then continue on to DXB

Yes, like an "Oil Run". Would probably make sense when routed via IAH or LHR ex DXB, if traffic rights are granted. A stand alone flight would make no sense
I reckon.
